Saajan’s First Holiday to Gran Canaria at The Lopesan Baobab Resort

It was definitely a trip we’d longed for! If you’ve been following our blog for a while, you’ll know that due to the surprise that was Saajan’s heart condition, we had to cancel our first holiday to Punta Cana – that holiday symbolised a lot for us as a family. It signified the “proper” start of our family, new beginnings and a fresh start. It also meant family time together to absorb all that we’d been through over the last few months. Little did we know that that chance at that time would be robbed from us as we’d have to embark on a journey that is every parent’s nightmare – that of open heart surgery!

With that behind us now, and with Saajan recovering so well, we decided it was time to get away! Our last trip as a family was to Santorini almost a year and a half ago while Saajan was still in my tummy!

My sister, Goov, recently got married and we decided it would be a nice time to go away with my parents and my sister, Harv, to give them a break after the wedding and it also would be great for us to have 3 extra pairs of hands with us!

With his surgery only 3 months behind us, we decided it would be sensible for our first trip to be somewhere close to home just incase. We decided Gran Canaria would be perfect as the weather is great, it’s a short flight (3.5 hours) and also there is no time difference minimising any disruption to our routine! It just seemed like an “easy” option compared to the others. Other than Santorini, we’d not done any European destinations with Arjun before – he’s such a jet setter, we’ve travelled to Dubai a few times, Abu Dhabi, the Maldives, Singapore and Bali!

We booked our trip with British Airways and the carrier was Iberia Express. Thankfully it was a short flight as the plane was definitely the smallest aircraft we’ve ever travelled in! It was a really tight squeeze for me let alone Preetam at 6’3!! The aircraft was super hot and most parents had stripped their restless babies down to their vest including us! The staff were really friendly and hospitable. No meals are provided on the flight but you’re able to purchase food and drink.

Thankfully we had my family with us – Harv was an absolute God send with the children as always!

I used my own in flight tips for both legs. On the way out, Arjun was a dream and Saajan wasn’t too bad. They shared the iPad and Arjun was entertained by a magazine we picked up on the way at the airport as his surprise toy.

Our hotel had kindly pointed us in the right direction for a transfer company who had kindly also arranged car seats to be included in the vehicle.

We arrived in Gran Canaria at about 9.30pm and by the time we got to the hotel it was about 10.30pm. Despite it being a short flight, we were all quite tired.

Upon pulling up at the hotel, we were instantly wowed. We were recommended the hotel by our good friends and we definitely weren’t disappointed on first impressions.

The hotel boasts a beautiful African theme – the attention to detail is second to none. My parents, who are from Africa, said it made them feel right at home! The impressive architecture is absolutely breathtaking! As we entered, it felt magical walking across the wooden bridge over a water landscape and subtropical gardens. The reception area was just as beautiful – the wooden posts, tree stump tables, and animal print upholstery.

The wider premises boast huge tropical gardens with 9 swimming pools, ponds, waterfalls and sand beaches with African huts with animal statues dotted around – always great for a photo opp!

In the centre, there is an absolutely stunning African lodge. The interior design is phenomenal with large straw (what look like) jelly fish hanging from the ceilings, unique seating areas captivating the African culture and high ceilings. The lodge was by far my favourite part of the whole hotel. It reminded me a little of the Maldives for some reason!

The resort is by far one of the most beautiful properties we’ve stayed at.

The reception staff were really helpful and friendly especially towards the children.

We’d selected a senior suite as we figured we’d need the extra space with two kids in tow and we are so glad we did! It was just beautiful and at approximately 68m², so so spacious.

The room had ample storage space for our entire luggage – we were all able to hang most of our clothes up and store our suitcases in the cupboards.  The suite itself had so much space so I was able to set up mini stations such as nappy changing items, poolside bits, feeding items and sterilising bits. The space really helped with being organised.

The bedroom was huge even with a cot in it! It also comes with a small sofa and desk and a TV with a sliding wooden cover. There’s a frosted picture panel between the bedroom and the bathroom which is a nice feature. The main bed had a beautiful snakeskin headboard and was huge and super comfy and there were lots of extra pillows and duvets if we needed them.  There was also a sofa bed in the lounge. There was a sofa in our room with a small coffee table and a desk. Arjun often used both to do colouring and play with his toys. There was direct access to the balcony from the bedroom as well as the lounge area.

Our room overlooked the pool and to the right of the balcony we had a view of the sea. The balcony area had two beautiful sun loungers which I often used to take beautiful shots of our littles! It was a nice place to relax when the kids were napping.

The bathroom was wow! The toilet was a large room. There were his and her sinks with a huge mirror (I love mirrors!).  The sinks were large enough to bathe Saajan in. The wooden tree detail is gorgeous and the little soap dish was my favourite thing! The shower was a really large room which was handy as it meant we could fit in when giving Arjun a shower over a bath. The only down side was the lighting was quite dim making it difficult to do my make up!

The bath tub was really big and Arjun loved having a bath (once we’d convinced him to get in!).  He had hours of fun splish splashing about.

The lounge was really spacious with a sofa, a TV and a dining table and chairs. We found the extra space so handy.

Just a pre warning, there is a charge for things like using the safe, for wifi and for an ironing board.

We arrived at the hotel quite late, about 10.30pm really hungry and were quite disappointed with the lack of a hot food room service menu at that time.  There were only cold foods available and barely anything for vegetarians.  Just a heads up if you have a flight that lands in fairly late!

The breakfast at the hotel was exquisite – the best by miles that I’ve seen in Europe.  They had fresh egg stands for omelettes and fried eggs, fresh fruit, a huge selection of cheese and breads, cereals, pastries. I could go on and on! It was really good for vegetarians – I particularly enjoyed their roasted vegetables, sautéed potatoes and grilled tomatoes with basil. I obviously had my daily crepe with Nutella for breakfast dessert too! It was a great opportunity for us to kick start Saajan’s weaning too.

Unfortunately for us, the lunch time and dinner time buffet options didn’t quite live up to our expectations based on breakfast. The selection looked amazing for non vegetarians however for us it was extremely limited.  Surprising considering the huge shift in vegan and vegetarianism! We basically lived of pasta, pizza, salad and chips daily for the first three nights as we were half board.

By the fourth night we were quite bored of the food and decided to venture out to some of the local restaurants which are located by the sea just a short walk away.  It was a shame as our half board dinner went to waste for four nights but half the fun of a holiday is the food!

We found the restaurant staff really pleasant and smiley however their English was quite limited.  One evening I asked what a particular ingredient was (I wasn’t sure if it was meat) and the gentleman wasn’t able to tell me it was mushrooms.

There was also no real desire to accommodate us – for example, one evening there were roast potatoes with bacon, we requested some plain potatoes without the meat if possible when the next batch was cooked and were declined.  The same happened the next evening with peas that included ham. Our stay was quite a let down in that sense – it’s definitely the most unaccommodating hotel we’ve stayed at food wise.  I met with the hotel catering manager and all she was able to offer us was a gluten free menu which just included gluten free pastas and pizza and so wasn’t very helpful sadly!

This was the only real let down during our stay but thankfully the fabulous location of the hotel meant that we were able to get pretty much whatever we fancied outside. The added bonus of having dinner outside was the beautiful view of the sunset by the sea!

I’d highly recommend Misbah for Indian food – the food was delicious and the restaurant overlooks the sea.  We also really enjoyed Sushi Mex which was a Japanese/Mexican restaurant again with a view of the sea and a gorgeous sunset.  There are several restaurants located in close proximity to these restaurants. There is also a small shopping centre and a few supermarkets right outside the hotel to grab snacks and other essentials which we visited almost daily!

Our favourite dessert place was Mar Cafe which was located a few minutes from the hotel.  They did the best Nutella crepes I’ve ever tasted and we visited for dessert way more times than we should have! The staff were really friendly and it’s a nice little casual place to catch a coffee and dessert after dinner.

Just outside the hotel, there is also an arcade place which Arjun visited daily with his daddy. I loved the location of the hotel because of how close everything was!

The hotel boasts 9 swimming pools, 2 of which are children’s pools.  We managed to see 6 pools in total. Our favourite was the lazy river one! It’s a shame there were no water slides at any of the pools bar the children’s ones.  However there is a beautiful waterfall by the bar at the main pool.  Most of our days were spent by the swimming pool relaxing! There were activities throughout the day such as Zumba and water aerobics which you could dip in and out of – Arjun, Harv and I had fun!  Most of the sun beds are located in gravel like sand which wasn’t great – it was a little painful to walk on to be honest!

Again, the food was limited by the pool – the only thing they had for vegetarians was a salad or a cheese and tomato with apricot chutney sandwich.  When we requested no chutney for Arjun, they said they’re unable to. My favourite thing to have by the pool was definitely the iced chocolate drink!

We did eat lunch at the Pili Pili restaurant once – the vegetarian lasagne was delicious!  This restaurant isn’t included in the half board option.

Despite the hotel being advertised as a beach resort, this is a little misleading.  The beach is about a 10 minute walk but it is so worth it! I’d recommend taking towels with you if you don’t wish to rent sun beds.  We purchased an umbrella and sat on the floor on towels as we wanted to be close to the sea front.  The beach was beautiful – the sand felt like a mattress and we really enjoyed watching the sunset!

The kid’s facilities at this hotel are by far the best I’ve seen – perhaps I’m more aware of it now as i have a toddler that needs a little bit of entertainment! The hotel’s mascot, Panchi, visits the children at breakfast every morning – the first day Arjun was sceptical but by the last he was running up to Panchi and giving him a great big bear hug! Panchi greets the children at their seat so not to distract them from their breakfast.

After that, Panchi and his team head off to the stage by the main pool and perform a little dance where the children can join in if they wish to do so.  It’s usually a Daler Mendhi tune so very close to home for us! Haha!

Panchi then comes out again at night for the Mini Disco.

There is a dedicated kid’s club where children older than 4 can go, under 4s require parental supervision.  The girls that work at the kid’s club were always so bubbly and friendly – i have no idea whwre they get their energy from! They work from morning to night.

There are two swimming pools at the kid’s club – one for little babies and one for toddlers.  Arjun went to the kid’s pools twice during our stay but was happy paddling about in the bigger pools with us.

He loved getting his face painted and also colouring in.  There is also a kids indoor area with soft play bits in.

There were various children’s activities that also take place throughout the day.

While Arjun had his fun, Preetam and I made the most of having babysitters to hand and so went for a Spa Experience at the Wellness Spa Corallium which is located at the sister property, Lopesan Costa Meloneras, across the road. Preetam’s not a spa kinda guy but we both really enjoyed the experience which usually lasts about four hours. We enjoyed it so much so that both of us fell asleep at some point during it! The experience consists of a unique circuit style spa experience using treatments that use water at different temperatures to improve the functioning of the muscles. Preetam’s favourite room was definitely the womb room and mine was the lava relaxation dome!

The hotel has it’s own gym which is adequate. However just by the exit, there is also a gym called Titan – definitely the best gym we’ve ever seen! It was beautiful! The gym offers a concession to guests at the hotel.  Preetam joined for the week and really enjoyed his workouts.

All in all we had such a beautiful first family holiday full of such happy memories and I was so grateful to be able to share those with my parents and sister too! The beautiful premises and location of the hotel made it really hard to believe we were in Europe!

The lack of flexibility and desire to accommodate food wise was a little frustrating at times however the facilities for children, the staff friendliness and the premises were absolutely wonderful. The location of the hotel is also perfect.  We’d definitely return but would go back on a bed and breakfast option next time and venture out for lunch and dinner!

A Short Break to Santorini with a Toddler!

This post is ridiculously late (a year and a half!)– this always happens with holiday posts as I have a gazillion pictures and always struggle to short list them! Still no excuse!

We travelled to Santorini in July last year before Saajan was born. It’s not the first place that springs to most peoples minds when it comes to travelling with a toddler, but given it was only for a few days we thought “why not”!

We normally plan our holidays a few months in advance at the very least as I’m one of “those” people. However, this was a last minute trip (we booked it a week or two in advance) and it was all a little bit crazy!! It meant I had no time to absorb that we were going and couldn’t quite get myself in to the “mode”. I guess booking last minute doesn’t allow you to build up such high expectations though we did pay an arm and a leg for this trip as Preetam was set on visiting Santorini. I’ve never left packing till the day before. Talk about living life on the edge!

A word of advice (which I really should’ve taken) when booking a holiday – look at the sale page on airline websites, not just the homepage search engine or don’t be extra silly like I was and turn straight to middlemen travel booking sites such as Expedia!! Though sometimes you may find great deals on travel supermarket sites, often you’ll pick up great deals on airline sale pages too. We ended up paying almost double – my mistake!

THE FLIGHT

Pre warning – I didn’t even think to check the small print as having to pay for check in luggage is something I associate with budget no frill airlines not airlines that charge approx £6/700 for an economy class ticket to Santorini. We flew with British Airways and upon online check in, we realised our flights didn’t include checked in luggage so we had to pay an extra £40 PER suitcase PER flight. Day light robbery! I was not pleased at all!

If I thought that was as bad as our holiday plans were going to get … I was wrong! We arrived at the airport and got there 40 minutes before baggage drop off opened, we decided to have breakfast. After filling our hungry bellies, Preetam queued up to drop our luggage – the queues were crazy and definitely not something we are used to! Arjun was patient for the most part but he did get antsy after half an hour or so, so I took him to WH Smiths to pick a magazine or two. Good timing as Preetam was done just as we left the shop. As we approached security I realised that our hand luggage trolley containing Arjun’s (milk, snacks, toys, comfort blanket, change of clothes, hoody, medicine, my medicine) was missing! I assumed Preetam may have accidentally checked it in but we quickly realised we’d left it at home! We had an hour till our flight boarded and there was no way he’d make it home and back in time. The only thing that was in there that I really needed was my blood pressure medicine especially given I was at the early stages of my pregnancy then.

The staff at the airport were absolutely amazing in helping us come up with a plan. FYI if you do forget your medication, Boots pharmacy are very helpful in trying to source it, my issue was I’d had my medicine changed a few days before and I didn’t know the dose. In the end Preetam’s dad and brother kindly rushed to our house, got the medicine and bought it to the airport check in desk. The staff quickly got it through security and to us 15 minutes before boarding! Phew! During that time, I frantically rushed to get the remaining bits that were in the suitcase as unfortunately it wouldn’t have been possible to get a whole suitcase through. In the end we ended up with Arjun’s change bag, my handbag, Preetams rucksack and a whole bunch of carrier bags! What a disaster! To say Preetam and I wanted to kill each other was an understatement but we luckily has a swift moment where we just looked at each other and cracked up – this isn’t the first time we’ve left that damn trolley at home! Last time we realised just as we got to the airport and had enough time to go back. What a start to our trip!

Luckily as soon as we got to the gate, we were kindly escorted to the front as we had Arjun. We were the only ones travelling with a child. It made me feel a tad uneasy. This was the first time he was going to have his own seat and I had no idea how he was going to react. Here were all these couples looking for a romantic getaway and here we were the annoying inconsiderate family onboard!

We’ve not travelled short haul with Arjun before so I was pretty excited for the 3hr 20m flight. I’m not a great flyer and to be honest, I’m pretty useless with Arjun – Preetam generally manages him when we fly as I struggle to stay awake on an airplane.

Arjun was an absolute gem for the most part. I was SO proud of him on take off – this is the first time he was fully awake and didn’t have Preetam’s Bose sound reducing headphones (we forgot those at home too!), or milk and he enjoyed it so much! We looked outside the window and watched the planes on the runway and he excitedly squealed “wee” as the plane took off. He was so excited to be in the sky and giggled as the plane steadied itself giving us little butterflies in out tummy. I was dreading the tears and had braced myself for the mean glares but he did me so proud.

During the flight, obviously we were without the toys I’d packed but the magazines Arjun had selected at the airport included little toys and we only had to open the Thomas the Tank Engine one to keep him entertained for ages. He also enjoyed watching Paw Patrol on the iPad (something we didn’t forget! Yippee!) and playing a colouring game on the iPad. I’d highly recommend taking an iPad on a short haul flight as you don’t get individual TV screens.

I was impressed by the standard of lunch on the plane – it was provided by Urban Eat.

Although it was a short flight, it did feel pretty long!

HIRE CAR

We decided to hire a car in Santorini as we only had a few days and wanted to make the most of them. We hired a Fiat 500 and picked it up from the airport. The hotel had helped us to arrange this. We’d requested a car seat and we had no issues with obtaining one once there.

HOTEL

We decided to stay at a non cliff located hotel just because of safety with a little gizmo toddler. We found Astro Palace Suites and it seemed to fit the bill – it looked luxurious, had beautiful views from the pool but had the safety of being slightly more inland.

The hotel staff were so friendly and helpful even before we got there.

The rooms themselves are very clean, spacious and the décor is shades of whites and greys and have an airy and tranquil feel. The bathrooms aren’t huge but they were sufficient.

Though we didn’t request one, the hotel had kindly provided a travel cot knowing we were travelling with a toddler. He didn’t end up sleeping in it at night but did use it to play in during the day.

The beds were really comfortable but unfortunately I struggled to sleep – it may have been pregnancy insomnia or because I’m used to sleeping with a pregnancy pillow even when I’m not pregnant so I think it was just me!

We stayed in a room which came with a private pool as the hotel kindly upgraded us. The private pool was spectacular – so clean and well kept. Each pool has it’s own sun loungers and sofa sets. Don’t be mistaken though, the pools aren’t private in the literal sense. They’re private in the sense that it’s your own but your neighbours can see you. Arjun unfortunately didn’t quite get the concept and often ran towards neighbouring pools. Luckily it wasn’t very busy at the time we went. The pools aren’t heated so Preetam and I struggled to stay in too long as the breeze from the hilly make up of Santorini contributed to us feeling cold – it didn’t stop Arjun though!

The main pool has lots of sun loungers, seats and canopies and boasts a beautiful sea view although it can get really windy here. Our towel flew off the sun lounger while we were in the pool!

The spa is a quiet space – I was the only person there at the time which made sense as the beauty therapist informed me that she was the only one that worked there. She was a really friendly girl and although it wasn’t the best massage I’ve ever had, it was a pleasant experience! I didn’t use any of the other spa facilities.

We had dinner at the pool side bar on our first night and they were really accommodating. It was good to see Arjun finally eat something after days of a hunger strike – he enjoyed their cheese and tomato spaghetti and even ordered it himself. He also enjoyed the olives – we couldn’t come to Greece and not have olives! Their warm bread with balsamic vinegar and olive oil was divine. I loved the Greek salad too – everything tasted so fresh. There are quite a few vegetarian options on the menu which was good to see.

Breakfast quality was average but lots of choice especially for vegetarians. I’m comparing it to our recent holidays which is probably quite unfair! Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bali and the Maldives are likely to be quite different!

PLACES TO EAT

For vegetarians, we found the selection a little narrow especially as I’m quite fussy which doesn’t help! Most places weren’t very adaptable. Here were some of our favourite places to eat while in Santorini (though they’re not Greek restaurants!):

Santo Wine Winery: This is a must to visit for the views alone. It was absolutely breath taking and I was in awe of natures beauty. It’s so peaceful and tranquil! They did the most amazing fresh virgin pina colada – something I’d been craving before arriving in Santorini! The picture I used for my pregnancy announcement was taken here.

Tabasco: This was an Italian restaurant located close to our hotel. The hospitality was great – Arjun’s cuteness even managed him a free dessert! Preetam managed to get a wide selection of sautéed vegetables and egg and I thoroughly enjoyed my pizza!

Senor Zobras: This Mexican restaurant was undoubtedly our favourite. Not only was the food amazing, but it had the best uninterrupted views. The atmosphere was really chilled out. We enjoyed the nachos and quesadilla and the wedges were delicious too. We’d highly recommend this.

PLACES TO SEE

To be honest, we didn’t have any grand plans when we set off to Santorini. We literally hired the car and drove around with our music blasting, windows down and absorbing the beautiful scenic views around us. Santorini is quite a small place meaning every direction you turn, the view is wow. I don’t think we would have enjoyed our trip as much as we did had we not hired a car – walking around with a toddler would have proved difficult and I probably would have struggled being pregnant too. Also from a safety perspective, there are lots of open cliffy areas, I wouldn’t want to risk Arjun running off. Where we came to such spots, we’d park up and pop out individually as opposed to taking Arjun out of his car seat as we weren’t prepared to risk it. Many young, child free couples hire quad bikes in Santorini – something Preetam and I do wish we’d done before we had kids!

Perissa: Perissa is a beautiful black sand beach. Be careful to not burn your feet as its very hot! We really enjoyed our time here – I loved watching Arjun and Preetam in the sea – Arjun’s naivety at how dangerous something so beautiful can be but watching how safe he felt with his daddy. It was definitely a moment of reflection for me.

Oia: Oia is a cute little town with lots of culture – the famous pictures of Santorini with the white buildings is taken here. It boasts really scenic views and is the best place to watch the sunset … if you manage to get a comfortable spot. It’s extremely busy as a popular tourist spot. There are lots of steps and narrow pathways – something to be mindful of if you are taking a buggy.

Ancient Thira: This was located at the very top of a mountain which many people were walking to. The roads are super narrow and it was super scary driving up! The views were absolutely breath taking – it looked like a post card. It was extremely windy at the top – I didn’t get out of the car and would definitely not recommend taking a baby out.

Kamari: This was another beach area which had lots of restaurants located on the beach. We stopped off at Vassilikos for a spot of lunch – they were really accommodating with our dietary requirements.  The view was beautiful with the sea crashing against the shore just a few meters away from where we were sat. Arjun was more interested in stripping off and getting in the sea than his lunch! If you have lunch at the restaurants, you’re entitled to free sun loungers directly in front of the restaurant, however we found the sea quite deep and the beach itself very busy so didn’t stay long.

All in all we had a lovely short break. Greek hospitality was fabulous – everyone was so friendly especially towards Arjun! Many fell in love with his quirky personality and he even got free ice cream sent to our table over lunch by a couple who said he reminded them of their grandson! The friendliness and warmth of the Greek really made our trip so much more enjoyable.

Abu Dhabi with a Toddler at The Emirates Palace Hotel

Arjun’s 5th holiday was definitely one to remember! It was our most challenging by far and the furthest away from what we’ve known holidays to be pre baby – he was constantly full of beans and wanting to explore! You can read about our previous holidays here:

Dubai

Bali

Singapore

Maldives

Here’s the d-low on our trip!

The Travel Village Group: Booking Agent

I used Sangeeta to previously book a surprise birthday trip to Las Vegas and Maui for Preetam’s 30th but unfortunately we had to cancel it as I ended up being 7 months pregnant at the time!

Sangeeta is always so patient with me (you need the patience of a saint with me sometimes!) – this time we weren’t sure if we wanted to try Abu Dhabi or whether we’d try and wing a quick trip to India. Sangeeta provided us with multiple quotes and options to help us make our decision. In the end we decided Abu Dhabi was the more sensible option although my heart was set on India given the 8 day time restriction.

We knew we wanted to give the Emirates Palace hotel a go in Abu Dhabi as we’d heard amazing things about it from friends. Sangeeta was great at communicating with the hotel that it was our anniversary and that we were travelling with a baby and also ensured our chauffeur also came armed with a car seat.

I’d definitely recommend booking your luxury holiday through Sangeeta – she’s armed with lots of knowledge on the most luxurious places to visit around the world and she’s very patient and accommodating to your needs.

Etihad Aiways

As we’d opted for business class, Etihad offer a chauffeur service from home to the airport.

Our driver turned up bright and early and I was really impressed with how friendly he was with Arjun. The car seat provided was easy to use and comfortable for Arjun. The vehicle provided was a Viano which is very spacious and comfortable. He came armed with a car seat as instructed.

I know it was 6am and perhaps not everyone’s a morning person, but I didn’t find the staff particularly helpful or friendly in the business lounge area which was a bit of a let down.

The service was also quite slow and sluggish and the quality of the food wasn’t anything to write home about. I’d still say my favourite lounge is still Virgin by miles.

There was a children’s playroom which helped keep Arjun entertained. He had fun building towers and knocking them over with daddy.

The aircraft itself was really lovely – it was one of the newer A380s. I loved the décor and space, especially with a fully mobile toddler!
I was armed with snacks and toys and I was going to give the iPad a go again but finding there was an onboard nanny was super exciting. Even if there was someone to entertain Arjun for 5 minutes, I was happy!
Arjun woke just before take off (Sod’s law!) but he was generally in good spirits. After a while, he did become a little agitated as he wanted to run around and explore. Family Guy (I’m so ashamed to say) kept him entertained for a good 20 minutes and he also played Lego with daddy on the floor for a while. He was entertained by the electric barrier between our seats too.

He really enjoyed the bar/lounge area which was definitely the best one I’ve seen onboard yet! You didn’t feel like you were on an aircraft at all and the service was brilliant.

Arjun loved playing with the flying nanny who did face paint on his hands, played with stickers and stamps. We didn’t end up needing to leave him with her as Preetam did a pretty good job by himself! He slept for three hours out of the six which wasn’t too bad and he woke up chirpy.

I was so impressed by the staffs service! The air hostesses were so attentive and the manager came right over and offered to come over as soon as we’ve taken off to play with Arjun. They were also super accommodating to dietary requirements and ensuring Arjun was comfortable and happy.

I was quite worried as initially Google had told me the flight was 8 hours, however it ended up being 6 which was just perfect. That’s the shortest distance we’ve done with Arjun!

You’d think being his 13th flight he’d be used to it and we’d be pros at managing it. Not at all. I always tell people that ask me; each flight is different and their mood will also be different! Just because the last was bad, doesn’t mean the next will be and vice versa. You’ve just got to ride it out. Each minute that passes is a minute closer to reaching your destination. It’s easy to feel guilty on a flight when your child is kicking off but they have as much right to be on that plane as anyone else (as quoted by a lovely air hostess!).

We had an equally fabulous experience on the flight back however the business class lounge was amazing for children. The staff in the kids play room were brilliant. They told us they were happy to take care of Arjun while we relaxed and he really enjoyed his time with them.

On the way out, when we landed, I was mortified at the chauffeur service. We were told by Sangeeta that a chauffeur would be there to collect us from the airport and would also have a baby seat. Unfortunately, as many others experienced, this wasn’t the service we received at all. It really left a bitter taste in my mouth given the amount of money we’d spent and the service we’d expected. Other passengers that were on our flight were also told the same by their travel agents who were told this by Etihad.

Instead, we had to wait in a taxi queue for 45 minutes after a 6 hour flight. There was no baby seat. This is definitely an area of their process that Etihad need to work on – it lets the rest of the experience down. There is a stark difference between the cabin crew and the ground staff.

Emirates Palace Hotel

This hotel has been described by many as 7 star and upon driving up to the hotel, it was clear to see why. The grounds are breath takingly huge and the building itself is stunning – scenes which may be familiar if you’ve seen the latest Fast and Furious movie as parts of it were shot at this hotel.

I was even more “wow’ed” when we walked in. The attention to detail is immense and the elegance and grandness of this hotel was like I’ve never seen before. It really does look like a palace. The detail on the door handles with the jewels, the never ending marble, the splashes of gold, the high ceilings – the place is breath taking! Not surprising given it’s the second most expensive hotel ever built in the world! You can definitely tell.

Check in was smooth and quick and I was greeted by a mini bouquet of roses and Arjun with a camel toy which he was thrilled about. The staff were really friendly.

Our room had been decorated for our anniversary which was a nice gesture although somewhere along the line, they were lost in translation as they thought it was our 15 year anniversary haha (our anniversary is on 15th Feb). We were also upgraded to a sea view room.

The rooms were the nicest rooms we’ve stayed in. Super spacious, clean and oh so luxurious! Having such a gorgeous room meant we didn’t mind spending time relaxing on the afternoons where we didn’t fancy the pool.
Each room comes equipped with a tablet which you can use to navigate through a movie catalogue. We must have watched about 20 movies while there!

The bathrooms were huge with a separate bath tub and shower which was really handy with Arjun. He really enjoyed bath time there.

One super unfortunate thing was, on the day of check in as by the time we reached the hotel, it was almost 9.30pm due to the faffing with getting transport to the hotel, we decided to go for a quick dinner at the buffet restaurant before heading to our room. What we didn’t know at the time was that our butler was waiting for us in our room – no one had communicated that to us.

As a result, we weren’t informed of the butler service until three days of being at the hotel when I requested new pillows. This was pretty disappointing given the kudos and price of the hotel. Upon raising this with the management staff, the subsequent service offered by our butler was brilliant. He took care of all our restaurant reservations – both internally and externally and also ensured we were topped up on daily treats!

Another downside for us was that the dress code was smart casual. I had packed for Preetam and silly enough hadn’t checked the dress code as every other hotel we’ve been to has a relaxed dress code for at least one restaurant on the premises. Unfortunately (first time ever!) I hadn’t packed any jeans or trousers for him and the dress code was smart casual at lunch and dinner across the hotel. This didn’t give us the best start to our trip as if you know Preetam, he’s a big guy and finding bottoms and shoes in his size proved difficult. It was a real shame as we’d hoped to have a totally relaxed and casual break away and to be as comfortable as possible but it didn’t quite turn out that way! We ended up eating outside of the restaurant on several occasions which meant the half board was wasted for the best part of our trip.

Finally, although the chef was very accommodating at the buffet restaurant, we felt that the size of the buffet and the vegetarian selection was quite poor and repetitive. One of the best bits about going on holiday is the food and having a selection to choose from as opposed to thinking of what you could eat and requesting that. The quality of the food was ok. We actually found the poolside food of a higher standard than the buffet. I’d highly recommend the falafel wrap (with a side of halloumi)! The best I’ve ever tasted.

Breakfast was average. The Indian food was always cold and not very flavoursome. The selection was your standard breakfast selection which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing and they had Nutella which was consumed daily and I’m still paying the price for it! The best breakfast we’ve ever experienced is definitely the Park Hyatt in Goa. The view at breakfast was beautiful.

We decided to dine at Hakkasan for lunch as on Friday afternoon, babies are welcome. Although Arjun was full of beans and wanting to run around, Preetam and I enjoyed our meal as the staff were absolutely amazing. They took Arjun and entertained him during our whole meal. It didn’t take long for Arjun to settle right in with them to the point where he didn’t want to leave them!

The food at Hakkasan was amazing – we really loved the mooli rolls and the black bean tofu and aubergine pot! It was a nice way to spend Arjun’s 20 month birthday too.

The swimming pools were amazing – there’s a pool at the east wing which also has a baby pool however the west side has an adventure pool with slides and a lazy river as well as a kid’s pool and kid’s club. Arjun absolutely loved the kid’s pool and was super confident in the water and even tried to swim himself! It was particularly handy as it was a quiet time of the year which meant the pool wasn’t flooded with lots of guests. I was so impressed by the children’s facilities – they had poolside toys which meant all the extra bits I took weren’t needed. They also provide beach toys at the beach. Arjun loved the macaroni cheese by the pool. He pretty much lived off that and olives for the whole trip!

In addition, they had a outdoor play area with a climbing frame and slide. Although we only went once, it was great to know that was there as an option to entertain Arjun.

The kid’s club has an indoor play room which we didn’t end up using as Arjun took to the pool too much to want to go anywhere else. Outside the playroom they had giant building blocks and a few other giant outdoor games which Arjun enjoyed playing with.

Arjun loved being in the pool but has become such a daredevil – he refused to wear his armbands most of the time, refused to sit in his float and wanted to jump in to the deep end by himself. You can’t take your eyes off him for even a split second now. I definitely preferred going away with others to make it more manageable!

The beach was nice – again children’s toys were provided and there’s also a camel which you can take pictures on! Arjun was more interested in petting him than sitting on him!

The weather was fantastic for the most part. We only had one day of rain. We even managed to get a Baby Brain Appael photoshoot done out there!

We enjoyed ourselves as a family and got to see Arjun’s personality shine through more than ever with his crazy little antics!

All in all, this was definitely one of the nicest properties we’ve visited in terms of architecture but I’m not sure we’d return here again based on the food and dress code. That’s got me thinking about what a holiday means to us – comfy clothing and good vegetarian food! When we return back to UAE, I think we’ll definitely be going back to Dar Al Masyaf as the service, food and facilities were impeccable, an added bonus is that toddlers and babies under 2 eat for free.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi

We were really after a relaxed holiday and didn’t plan anything much in advance. Compared to Dubai, it felt like there wasn’t much to do. I probably preferred Dubai a lot more to Abu Dhabi based on the hotel we stay at and also the things to do. It may just be that we’re now used to Dubai!

Marina Mall: this was situated a 20 minute walking distance from our hotel. We ended up visiting three times during our stay. As well as your usual high street shops and several restaurants, there is Fun City located on the top floor of the mall. This is like a small indoor amusement park which was great fun for Arjun. He enjoyed going on the toddler rides.  It was nice having it so local to the hotel as it meant post dinner he could burn a little energy.

Ferrari World, Yas Island: We’d been told by friends that Ferrari World was a little overrated and over priced for what it was but if we needed a day out then it was nice as something to do. Arjun ended up getting sunburn after a few days in Abu Dhabi, so we thought a day indoors away from the sun would be a good idea. I agree with the sentiments of our friends – it was approx. £50 per person for entry and the food was quite overpriced and poor too.
I’m not a fan of big rides, but Preetam went on a few rollercoasters as Arjun and I spectated. It was quite quiet during the week and there were no queues. Arjun really enjoyed the family ride as he got to “drive” a car. We went on that ride a few times.

He also enjoyed watching his daddy participate in the go karting race (and winning!).  He really loved the soft play car wash although it was quite simplistic to what I was expecting based on the description online. We had a nice family day out and it was great that everything was indoors.

The Cheesecake Factory, Yas Island: We couldn’t visit Abu Dhabi and NOT go to the Cheesecake Factory. As always, we weren’t disappointed. The staff at this particular branch were super friendly towards Arjun and I generally find The Cheesecake Factory fab for catering to little ones. We enjoyed the deep fried macaroni cheese balls, the zucchini, mushroom and avocado fries and the nachos! The portions are ginormous – I always find myself in a food coma after!

Rose Water Restaurant, Etihad Towers: We were told by our friends to visit this restaurant as the vegetarian selection was a lot better than at the Emirates Palace. The selection was absolutely huge with a wide range of different cuisines. I was especially wow’ed by the different types of bread on offer and the epic chocolate fountain. I was also impressed with how well they catered to children – they had plastic plates and cutlery for babies which was great. This place is definitely high up in the quantity ranks but not as high in the quality ranks – we found the food average but really enjoyed the overall experience.

All in all, we had a nice time in Abu Dhabi but I’m not sure we’d return to spend a whole holiday there. Perhaps as a day trip from Dubai next time!

Any suggestions on our next holiday destination?

Holidays with A Toddler … The Dream vs the Reality

“He’ll get to try lots of different foods as it’s all prepared” … He opts for a bowl of olives. Every. Damn. Time.

“He’ll relax nice at the pool … Surely he could do with kicking back and chilling” … Yeh right, he prefers to have us running around like headless chickens as he threatens to jump in to the deep pool flashing us a cheeky grin

“His early morning starts will work well on holiday” … Most days he woke up past 10.30am and we just about made it down for breakfast!

“We can get some poolside down time while he naps” … Nap? What nap?!

“We’ll get to have lovely family dinners” … He would prefer to hang out with the waitress

“He’ll eat lots of fresh fruit for snacks” … An ice lolly (or two!) all the way

“He’ll love the play zone at the local soft play centre” … Escalators all the way!

“We’ll get to lounge in bed and watch movies” … He spent the whole time by the phone calling whichever short dial he could or dancing to the answer phone tone

“It’s a great chance to get fab family photos” … After a million takes and there’s STILL one person that isn’t looking at the camera!

“We’ll get to use all the amazing facilities at the hotel for kids” … No thanks, pool please.

“We’ll get him used to the high chair at restaurants again” … Depending on his mood

“He’ll love the play zone at the local soft play centre” … Escalators all the way!

“It’s a great time to take a break from social media” … Yeh right, he does way too much cute stuff to not share right now #BloggerLife

“He’ll love playing in the sand at the beach!” … As long as he’s not sitting on it

To the Obnoxious Woman on the Flight Back Home (Flight EY017, Row 4)

To the woman that aggressively just told my son to “shh be quiet people are sleeping” on the day flight back from Abu Dhabi as you visited your friend behind us.

How dare you.

I understand it’s frustrating.

I understand it’s annoying.

I understand others are napping …

… But how dare you.

My son has just as much right as you to be on this plane. We’ve paid for our seats just like you have.
Apologies my son doesn’t know that adults want to nap during a day flight. That his body clock is set to Abu Dhabi time and actually it’s 7pm in Abu Dhabi right now and 3pm in London so by no time zone recently known to him is it bed time. Do excuse my child for being so amateur in his ability to understand. He’s a baby. He’s done extremely well on this flight in my opinion so screw you.

And FYI, we deliberately picked a day flight as we felt it would be less disruptive him being awake during the day than during a night flight which was the case when we went to Dubai. So yes we did consider fellow passengers.

Do you think we haven’t encouraged Arjun to keep his voice down? Do you think I’m enjoying my son making “whooshing” sounds whilst he jumps around while others are napping? At least he’s not crying right?

He’s happy.

He’s smiling.

He’s playing.

The sound of his laugh is such a beautiful one. How could you react so unkindly?

He slept for a whole 2.5 hours earlier. Perhaps your schedule should run by his. Just like your expecting his to run by yours? Perhaps YOU and your friend should have slept during that time.

I wonder if you have children. If you appreciate how difficult it is to control them. If you do have children, have you forgotten?

When and if I hear you say anything with such a harsh tongue to him again, I’ll be having a polite word. I forgave you this time for your ignorance – when you spoke so rudely to my son, you did so knowing he is unable to defend himself at his tender age. You assumed his daddy couldn’t hear you as he had his headphones on and you assumed I was asleep – what you didn’t realise was, I’m wide awake and heard your malicious piercing ugly voice. With that my blood boiled.

How dare you.

When a complete stranger speaks so rudely and with such a sharp tongue towards MY child , a whole new side of me comes out that I didn’t know existed. A side you probably don’t want to see.

I hope you’re actually not that full of anger on a day to day basis because it must be pretty draining if so. I hope you were just having a bad couple of minutes and my son was at the receiving end.

And just to be clear; I don’t have a problem with your message, I have a problem with your delivery.

I hope you have a peaceful remaining flight and I pray that you are blessed with a softer tongue at least with children.

P.s whoever you came to visit in the seat behind us, feel free to tell them to use the ear plugs provided. They serve a purpose 🙂

Singapore & Bali with a Toddler – The Packing List!

Hello all,

I thought I’d share an updated holiday packing list given Arjun is no longer a baby so my previous ones may not be as applicable! Also, this was our first holiday travelling for 2 weeks and the luggage limit meant I really had to be sensible with my choices. I was a little more relaxed with his clothing packing this time (although it may not seem it! Haha!), because I’m a lot more confident based on the holidays (Dubai x 2 and the Maldives) we’ve had with Arjun.

Here’s what we packed for our 2 week holiday to Singapore and Bali!

Hand Luggage:

  • Baby Zen YoYo – I love this buggy, it folds up in to hand luggage size which means it doesn’t get bashed about with the check in luggage. It also means we can keep Arjun in his buggy till we reach the plane. Arjun’s quite happy to be in his buggy and used it more on this holiday than any other.  Probably because he was tired from all the running around!

Skip Hop Monkey Bag (Nappy Bag)

Instead of our usual change bag, I opted for a much smaller option as I felt it would be a lot easier to carry during our travels. I’m so glad I made this decision because it really helped not having to lug a large change bag around!

skip hop monkey

In our make shift change bag, I included the following items:

  • 5 nappies
  • Vaseline
  • Metanium (just incase!)
  • Nappy bags
  • Change mat
  • A change of clothes in the front pocket
  • Water beaker in the side slot

Trunki

We also took a Trunki as our hand luggage for Arjun. We purchased the bright green Trunkisaurus Rex version for £35.99.  As mentioned in my “Singapore & Bali with a Toddler – The Flights” post, I had my doubts about the Trunki  and I’ve explained those here although Arjun absolutely loved it!

IMG_6389

In the Trunki we packed the following:

  • An extra change of clothes
  • A babygrow
  • A toy sack which included a chalk board, pencil case with crayons and chalk, a colouring book, building bricks, a soft football, 2 stacking cups, a toy car and a soft turtle
  • Arjun’s snack box – brilliant as it was used throughout the holiday.

IMG_6335

  • Thin blanket – we didn’t end up using this as we were given one on the flight.
  • iPad – We also took the iPad but carried that in Preetam’s carry on luggage.  The iPad was barely used – I’d taken it as the surprise toy hoping that Arjun would be entertained for hours, I was quickly disappointed! He wasn’t interested at all!

Check in Luggage:

Medication:

I was particularly paranoid about packing for Bali. I was so worried Arjun would get bitten by a mosquito, or that he’d fall sick and there’d be no immediate medical attention. He’d been really poorly a few days prior to our departure and had his first ambulance trip. It was really scary and we weren’t sure we were even going to still go away. But he’d perked up by the time we were due to fly out. I’d packed everything I thought I’d need just incase! But actually our hotel was brilliant and an onsite 24/7 doctor was available. Here’s what we packed anyway:

  • Baby talc – just incase he developed any rash around his neck from the extra heat.
  • Calpol – especially as he was so unwell the few days prior to us departing.
  • Nurofen
  • Piriton
  • Thermometer
  • Anbesol – he was having a bout of teething so I knew we’d need this!
  • Ashtons & Parsons teething granules
  • Mosquito repellent – I used the Boot’s own brand and was so happy with it. He didn’t get bitten once even though the rest of us faced multiple bites!
  • Calamine lotion – I had this left over from when Arjun had chicken pox and read that it was also good for sunburn. Thankfully we didn’t need it for Arjun but I did end up using it!

We didn’t end up actually using any of the above items apart from the last 2 however I’d still pack them just incase.

Nappy Changing:

  • 75 nappies – we pretty much used up all of these. If we had run out, it wouldn’t have been an issue as Bali Collection was right next door to our hotel and they had ample supplies of nappies!
  • Nappy bags
  • Wipes – we took 4 packs as we also used wipes during meal times. We ended up using 3 packs. In hindsight I could have taken less and bought more from Bali Collection if I’d needed them.

Swimming and Bathtime:

  • Baby Swim Float – Arjun spent a lot of time pushing this around but also enjoyed sitting in it. It’s definitely a must with a baby on holiday! We also ended up purchasing arm bands for him while away. Although he wasn’t comfortable with us letting go of him, it was a step closer to water independence!

IMG_7302.JPG

  • Zoggs Kids Seal Flips Swim ToyEdit – there were great as swim toys. They were new to his water toy collection and he had lots of fun throwing them and catching them. When you blow on them, they flip over. The pack comes with 5 little spaceship shaped toys and were a great buy.

zoggs

  • Hairbrush – we never used this as his curls are too thick to brush over, a comb is what we used.
  • Haircomb
  • Baby wash – I took a head to toe wash which we use here in the UK
  • Face cream – we didn’t end up needing to use this but i took it just incase he suffered with any dryness due to the heat
  • Swim nappies – I only took one pack assuming he’d only spend half an hour to an hour in the pool each day as he has done on pervious holidays to Dubai and the Maldives. However, in Bali he was in the pool for up to 5 hours a day! We ended up using up our swim nappies on the last day and unfortunately there weren’t any available at Bali Collection. Definitely take enough of these if travelling to Bali.
  • Sunscreen – the highest factor I could find though he’s more tanned than any of us!
  • Swimwear x 3– we probably could’ve gotten away with just the 2 but we had them so took them anyway. One of the swimsuits came with a matching swim hat. The other 2 we used regular sun hats with.
  • Sun hat x 2 – he doesn’t often like wearing hats, so I didn’t go crazy. We used the 2 we did take, mainly in the pool.
  • Swim towel x 1 – we took the one but didn’t end up using it much other than to pat his face dry as it was so warm and he dried off real quick.
  • Mickey Mouse beach bag – this goes everywhere with us and houses our camera, poolside nappy changing bits, swim toys and poolside baby snacks
  • Bath towel x 1 – I normally would’ve taken at least 2 of these, but due to the restricted lugguague allowance, I could only take the 1. We ended up washing it while there.
  • Nail cutter – definitely a must when away for 2 weeks!
  • Cotton buds
  • Massage oil – especially essential after a day in the pool in the sun!
  • Toothbrush
  • Colgate

Feeding:

  • Ready made formula x 35 cartons – i couldn’t be dealing with the faff of having to boil a kettle and allowing it to cool so I took ready made cartons. I’m always uncomfortable allowing Arj to drink milk abroad, not sure why though!?
  • Fairy liquid – in a small travel bottle for washing his beakers
  • Weaning bibs x 3 – I took them but he refused to use them which is where the extra wipes came in handy.
  • Ella’s kitchen fruit pouches x 25 – always brilliant as a snack and when on the go. We used about 20 of them.
  • Beakers x 3 – for both milk and water
  • Cutlery – I’d taken a set but we never used it. He ended up using the restaurant spoon or fork, or his hands!

Sleeping:

  • Cellular blanket – we didn’t end up using this as Arj slept in our bed with us and used the duvet.
  • Books – I took one book and his masis bought him “That’s not my Monkey” which he read quite a bit

Travel:

  • SnoozeShade – we didn’t use it at all as we didn’t really use the pram during the day.
  • Pram FanEdit – I took this but forgot to take batteries which was a real shame! In the end we ended up purchasing another one which also had a water mister from Universal Studios to cool Arj down.
  • Giant muslins x 2- I took these to use as a cover up if we went for a wakl on the beach after breakfast like we used to in Dubai. We didn’t end up doing logn walks on the beach so didn’t use the muslins at all.
  • Insect Pram Net – we didn’t end up using this at all as the mosquito repellent on Arj’s clothes was enough. I also don’t thin he would’ve taken too well to a net over his buggy as he loves to see what’s going on around him!

Clothing:

  • Vests x 7 – didn’t use any of these
  • Rompers x 8 – we used all of these
  • Babygrows x 10 – we used all of these for bedtime. I decided to take babygrows as opposed to pyjamas to ensure his top didn’t ride up during the night increasing the risk of mosquito bites. I quickly learnt that Arjun hates having his feet covered though!
  • Shorts x 8 – we used 5 out of the 8 pairs
  • T shirts x 10 – we used 9 out of the 10 some of which we used to model mummy’s new kid’s fashion line! 🙂

IMG_7343.JPG IMG_7268.JPG IMG_7012.JPG

  • Polo shirts x 5 – we used 2 out of the 5
  • Long sleeve tops x 3 – we used 2 out of the 3 for flights
  • Socks x 6 – we used 3 pairs for flights
  • Hoody x 1 – we used this for the flights
  • Long sleeved vests x 5 – we used 1 for the return flight back to the UK
  • Joggers x 2 – we used both for lounging and the filghts
  • Sleeveless vests x 4 – we used 1 as it was too hot to leave his shoulders exposed
  • Leggings x 5 – he wore these on the flights

Shoes:

  • Swim sandals – I got these from next and they ended up being such a great buy. I didn’t realise how much he’d be running around. The floor was super hot so this was a great way to protect his little tootsies and they dried up pretty quick.
  • Havaianas – he didn’t wear these
  • Next strap on sandals – he wore these everyday
  • Adidas trainers – he wore these twice
  • Clarks shoes – he wore these at the airport

Other bits:

  • Laundry sacks – I always take these from home although hotels do provide them. I separated all our clothes in to darks and whites so it was easy for me to get the washing done when we got home.
  • Cellotape – It’s a “thing” I have, cellotape always has to be at the ready! I use it for all sorts like sealing bottles shut when coming back home – the last thing I need is leaked make up all over our clean clothes!
  • Scissors – again, something that has to be at the ready and always comes in super handy!

Are there any other bits that you’d add?x

Singapore with a Toddler!

Our first stop on our dual destination holiday was Singapore. We’ve visited Thailand and Malaysia already so I was pretty excited about visiting Singapore. I’d heard lots of good things! Our holiday was made up of 2 nights in Singapore, and 8 nights in Bali.

Due to the time difference, we were pretty pooped when we got to Singapore! We left London at 11am and arrived at Singapore 8am local time so we pretty much lost a whole night. It was Arjun’s longest flight to date! I managed to get quite a bit of sleep on the plane but the others were less fortunate (it definitely wasn’t my snoring keeping them up! Haha!).

We stayed at the Sentosa Golf and Spa Resort by Sofitel. The hotel is set on beautiful grounds and there are many peacocks wandering adding an additional splash of colour. We were welcomed in our room by one on the balcony!

The rooms were clean but not overly spacious like we’re used to with a baby. We were fortunate to get interconnecting rooms with my sisters which meant Arjun had a little more freedom to run around. It also meant the passage way to our rooms could be used to store his buggy and bag. I especially liked the bathrooms which came with a big shower and bath tub.

The hotel is located on the beach but we didn’t get the chance to visit the beach. As we were only in Singapore for two nights, we didn’t get to make the most of the hotels facilities which was a shame. The pool looked gorgeous – it’s a shame we didn’t get to use it but our plan was to make the most of exploring Singapore in the few days we had there and to relax once we arrived in Bali.

Arjun had fun exploring the open corridors of the hotel!

The breakfast selection was great, they had continental, Indian, Asian to name a few and they had a great selection of fresh juices which Arjun really enjoyed. I was pretty excited to see him eating like his old-self on the first morning. However it was short lived! He was back to his shrunk appetite soon after.

I was really impressed by the hotels attention to detail where it came to Arjun. Not only did they provide a cot, baby bath and also baby cups but at breakfast they also bought out a plastic plate and cutlery for him. I’ve not seen that before so was really pleased by it.

Be wary when arranging a taxi here, the prices from the hotel are extortionate! A local blue taxi is much cheaper. Our airport transfer was $150 but a local taxi was $55.

Things to do in Sentosa:

Viva Shopping Centre: we popped by here on our first night as somewhere to visit for dinner. It’s like a regular shopping centre with lots of high street shops and local eateries.

Universal Studios: It was super easy to get to Universal Studios from our hotel. We took the complementary shuttle bus to Viva Shopping Centre and then took the Sentosa Express from there straight to Universal Studios (it’s one stop!).

Initially my mum and I weren’t going to go to Universal Studios, we were instead going to go shopping. At the last minute we had a change of heart and decided to join the rest of the family and we were so glad we did! We had such a blast! The last time I visited universal Studios was in America about 10 years ago. I’m always so impressed by the level of effort it must take to build a place like this. The detail in the figurines, rides and set ups must be immense and it really pays off given how much awe you see on those around you as they wander through different lands. You can’t deny that there is a buzz and excitement in the air and it definitely made me feel like a big kid again!

Arjun was fascinated by what was going on around him. There was a lot to absorb, the huge real life characters, the hugest dinosaurs he’s ever seen, different backdrops and scenes bursting with colour and excitement, it was a bit of sensory overload! He loved seeing the huge dinosaurs at Jurassic Park Land and his favourite thing was playing in the water fountains beneath them! I didn’t mind as it was a pretty hot day and he needed cooling off! He also loved Shrek World and playing with the toys in the Shrek shop.

He even got to meet a baby dinasaur called Diana!

As we went on a Tuesday, there were pretty much no queues for any of the rides so we got to see most things. I’m not an adrenaline junkie, infact I really dislike rollercoasters so I skipped a few of them! I did however go on the Enchanted Airways (from Shrek) ride (I kept my eyes shut the whole time!) and my favourite ride was the Transformers simulator ride which felt crazy real even though we were pretty much in the same spot! Amazing what camera tricks and a simulator can do to you!

We took Arjun on the merry-go-round and on the Madagascar ride but he clearly wasn’t impressed! He’d probably enjoy the Madagascar ride when he’s a little taller so he can properly see what’s going on around him. He wasn’t allowed to sit on our lap so his view was probably the security bar infront of him with the tip of the boat as the backdrop for most of the ride!

Arjun got lots of attention here with lots of people wanting to take a snap with him! He embraced it with lots of smiles and waves (as he does!).

We had lunch at the Diner and I was especially excited as they had a veggie burger option there. It was delicious! I’d also recommend the cheesy fries.

We had a really great family day out at Universal Studios. The park is small enough to get around in a day provided there are no queues. There are lots of places to eat and lots of food carts to keep you hydrated and fuelled!

There are also lots of eateries just outside Universal Studios – famous places like Chillis and The Hard Rock Café.

Silat Road Gurdwara: When we are abroad, we always try and locate a Gurdwara. My parents go to the Gurdwara daily here in the UK so for them, a huge chunk of their life is missing when they are away from home. We visited the Silat Road Gurdwara which was 5 minutes away from the hotel. It was really calm and tranquil. There was a really nice atmosphere as the people doing seva (free community work) were chanting simran at the same time. Arjun really enjoyed the langar but insisted on feeding himself – there was more rice on the chair than in his mouth!

Arab Street: My mum and I couldn’t resist! We decided to get in a spot of shopping before our plane took off for Bali. We’re suckers for fabric and had been told Arab Street was the place to go. It cost us $12 to get to Arab Street from the hotel which wasn’t bad given it was about a 25 minute ride. All the shops on Arab Street pretty much sell textiles and fabric. There was lots and lots of it! However it wasn’t necessarily cheaper. We both bought a sari, some loose fabric and I also purchased a new top. It was ok but I’m glad we didn’t miss out on Universal Studios for it as we were done within an hour!

All in all, we really enjoyed our short trip to Singapore. I hope to visit again! x

Singapore & Bali with a Toddler … The Flights!

As you can imagine, I was slightly apprehensive about travelling on a 13 hour flight (14 hour flight on the way back!) with a fully mobile toddler. He was also going through a bout of teething which meant he wasn’t his normal perky self. I was a tiny bit tensed! This was our first holiday since he’s started walking and it would be our first time travelling with Arjun in economy. We’d decided to fly economy as my family had already booked their holiday when we decided to join them. I knew it would be more enjoyable for us to all fly together rather than be split up. Plus the extra pairs of hands would be good!

The reason we usually fly business is because Preetam’s height (6’4) makes it pretty uncomfortable to travel in economy. Also because Arjun is stuck to Preetam like glue for most of the flight, the extra space is really handy with a baby. You forego queuing and also have access to a lounge which is helpful with a baby as they often have a play area and lots of free room for them to run wild before being confined to the teeny tiny space of a cabin!

This was our first time flying with Singapore Airlines and I’d heard great things about them so was looking forward to the experience.

A few things that I was a little disappointed about prior to the flight. Arjun’s luggauge allowance was 10kg. 10kg for a 2 week holiday for a baby (who has more stuff than me!) seemed really crazy. I’d spoken to other friends with babies who’d travelled with other airlines on economy and they confirmed they’ve never had such a tiny limit for a baby. It was quite a challenge packing this time as it was our longest holiday with him and the smallest luggage allowance. Preetam ended up getting the 10kg allowance, and Arjun and I took our full 28kg ;). He doesn’t win daddy of the year for nothing!

Secondly, we’d requested a vegetarian baby meal to which I was told they couldn’t guarantee it would be vegetarian. I’ve had this issue before with other airlines and I find it super frustrating. I don’t really understand why a vegetarian meal can’t be guaranteed for a child if it can be guaranteed for an adult? Especially if they were given over a months notice!

Pre Flight

We were fortunate enough to be departing the day the clocks went back which meant we got an extra hours sleep which made the 7am wake up not so bad! We’ve never done a day flight when flying out before and I had mixed feelings about it. Unfortunately picking a night flight doesn’t always mean your baby is going to sleep through (though the chances are a lot higher!) as I learnt on our second trip to Dubai. And as it was a night flight, we were all exhausted by the end of it. So the thought of going on a day flight was welcomed though I was apprehensive about how we’d entertain Arjun the whole way!

I was armed with my snack box, toys consisting of a chalkboard, a doodle pad, crayons in his new pencil case, and the iPad to name a few! He’d never used the iPad before, so I thought we’d use that as his surprise toy this time. I’d loaded it with lots of games and videos as recommended by several blogging buddies. Which kid doesn’t like an iPad right?! … :/

We got to the airport and were shortly greeted by my family. I was so super excited! We decided to do a quick spot of sunglasses shopping and sucker mummy me ended up buying him his very own Ray Bans. He loved walking around with them on all holiday so it was definitely a good buy (though he would have been equally happy donning his £2 Sainsbury’s ones too!).

This time around I’d purchased a Trunki assuming it would be super handy for carrying his stuff and also because he’s aware enough to know what’s his now. Trunki’s are really meant for children 3+. Firstly, this was pretty impractical, the shape of the Trunki made it really difficult to fit all his things in. So we ended up carrying a few bits in other bags which wasn’t ideal as the last thing you want to do on a plane is faff through several bags. Secondly it’s pretty heavy. With a 17 month old toddler, he wasn’t going to push it all the way himself. So a lot of the time we had to hold it.
On the plus side, he was absolutely obsessed with it! He didn’t want to be without it and would have a scream if anyone else tried to touch it (even to transport it!). He refused to get off it when it was time to board the plane and had a mini melt down which was probably pretty entertaining for onlookers but not so entertaining for us!

One decision I did make right was to not take our usual change bag. I took a Skip Hop ruck sack instead for his change items. It was a lot easier to carry especially for nappy changes on the plane. Although smaller, I kept things like his medicines in a separate bag. The main section of the Skip Hop fit 5 nappies, a change mat, wipes, Vaseline, and nappy bags. The front pocket for a change of clothes and his teething gel for easy access. I especially loved taking the ruck sack as it includes a side slot for a beaker which made it very easy to grab if we needed to especially when lugging around a gazillion suitcases!

We had a spot of breakfast and headed towards the gate. We managed to keep Arjun awake till we boarded the plane. The wait time was actually not bad at all given they allow for families with children to board first which is always handy for storing away luggage and settling the baby without a massive audience watching you struggle!

The Flight: London to Singapore

The aircraft felt pretty spacious and we were sat on the seats with extra leg room so I was ok. Preetam really struggled for the 13 hours as he wasn’t able to stretch his legs out, especially once the bassinet had been put in place!

Once we were settled, we gave Arjun some milk prior to take off and he fell asleep just before we took off. He also slept on landing! We’d never used a bassinet on a flight before as there’s always been enough space for him to lie flat on either mine or Preetam’s seat. The lovely airhostess asked if we wanted to give it a go. We decided we would especially as this was going to be a long journey. He slept in it fine but this was definitely his last flight in a bassinet as a) the weight allowance is 14kg, and I’m guessing by February he’ll be past that given he’s 12kg now b) he’s already too tall. We had to roll up a blanket and put it beneath his legs so that they could hand off the edge of the bassinet. Not ideal but we didn’t really have much of a choice.

In flight they had episodes of Mickey Mouse and also Baby TV which was brilliant. Arjun probably watched an episode or two of Mickey but isn’t as excited by tele as much as he used to be. Wish I’d made the most of it then and remembered that nothing lasts forever!

Arjun probably slept for about 6 hours of the total 13 and to be honest it was one of our better flights with him. He was an absolute angel. He had one mini melt down where he was a bit fed up, but thankfully Goov’s bun came to the rescue! He found her hair the most fascinating thing ever! His masis and nana ji an nani ji were brilliant at distracting him and taking him for walks up and down the cabin.

There was another mummy travelling with a baby that was a similar age to Arjun, so every so often he’d pop by there and check up on her! His daddy tried all the tricks in the book to entertain him too – most of which involved him looking like a big goof! 🙂 He loved playing with the entertainment system remote (using it as a telephone), singing nursery rhymes and stowing and unstowing the lap tray. He also loved pouring water from one cup in to another – messy but at least it kept him busy!

The iPad, I tried the iPad. I hadn’t even thought about this failing. It was a guaranteed winner right?! … Apparently not. He wasn’t the least bit interested.

The snack box came in really handy, it entertained him for a long while and gave him freedom to choose what he fancied eating without it being mushed in our bag. I had also packed away some pouches given the airline couldn’t guarantee vegetarian food. In the end they provided us with vegetarian baby jars. He also had a few bread rolls from the adult selection and helped himself to some banana chocolate chip ice cream!

One really disappointing thing about the flight was that they didn’t provide an egg free option for my parents, so they pretty much went without proper food for 8 hours! They also had no egg free snack option which was such a shame given we’d requested this a month in advance.

All in all, the flight wasn’t bad at all. I managed to get quite a bit of sleep as did Arjun. I definitely preferred a day flight as even if Arjun didn’t sleep, it wouldn’t have resulted in Preetam and I being super exhausted as it wasn’t night time. It definitely didn’t feel like 13 hours!

The Flight: Singapore to Bali

Our flight from Singapore to Bali was a late afternoon flight which worked well as it coincided with Arjun’s nap.

The make up was a lot cheaper here than in the UK – I managed to pick up my favourite Clinique eyeliner for £14 vs £20 in the UK!

There are a few food options at the airport, but we stuck to McDonalds fries and meat free cheeseburgers (with extra salad and mayo! … so basically a cheese sandwich!).

The staff at Singapore airport were all so friendly and by this point Arjun had mastered his royal wave! He was in good spirits when we first arrived at the airport but was pretty fed up by the time we got to the lounge. He was demanding to sit on his Trunki but also hold the lead which meant no one was able to pull him along to board the flight.

We figured he was pretty tired by this point – it’s quite sweet, he tells you now that he wants to go in his buggy when he’s tired by pointing to it and trying to climb in it himself.
As soon as we boarded the plane, the air hostess gave Arjun a Minnie Mouse toy which vibrates when you pull the little lead. He was entertained by that for ages! The flight was pretty empty so we’d all planned to reshuffle post take off. Arjun was fine during take off and continued to play with his new toy. The moment we were up in the sky, he fell asleep. We made him his own little bed using 3 seats and a few blankets and pillows. He slept the whole flight!

The only negative on this flight was around the food again – the cabin crew weren’t sure what the main course was which was worrying for those that may have allergies or dietary requirements.

The Flight: Bali to Singapore

There was absolute chaos at Bali airport due to several flights being delayed or cancelled due to an ash cloud. Thankfully our flight was on schedule though there are much worse places to be stuck in!

It was an 8pm flight and Arjun was pretty grizzly, it was probably the combination of tiredness, the heat and the sheer volume of people caving in on us. I was also pretty stressed and snappy which didn’t help! Maybe our holiday blues were just setting in early?!

We had quite a bit of time to kill at Bali airport as we had left early anticipating the chaos. Arjun spent his time running around while pushing a stool which he refused to part with. He even took it outside of the eating area!

This flight was pretty horrendous. It reminded me of the flight we had from London to Dubai where Arjun was awake most of the time crying. All he wanted to do on the plane was run around but he didn’t have the space or the freedom to do so. This would have been a perk of flying business – there is ample space.

Arjun spent most of the 3 hours crying and refusing to go to anyone but his dad. I really felt for Preetam but as always he remained really calm. I was dreading the connecting flight to London which was straight after this one and was our longest flight yet – 14 hours!
I didn’t manage to get any pictures of the drama!

The Flight: Singapore to London

We rushed over from the Bali flight straight on to this flight. The walk was pretty long (from one side of the airport to the other!) and I was feeling pretty anxious and frustrated with Arjun. I was so nervous about the next flight especially as it was a night flight.
This flight Arjun was an angel – he slept for about 8 of the 14 hours and was happy to be entertained by me and my family giving his daddy a little break.

Given he spent 17 hours pretty much continuously on a plane, he did remarkably well! We couldn’t have done it without the help of my parents and my sisters.

I’d love to hear about your experiences with long haul flights!x

Bali with a Toddler!

We had such an incredible time and without a doubt this was one of my favourite holidays of all time.

I had originally planned on not using my phone much whilst out there and to be honest I didn’t. I only used it when in the hotel room. I felt so free. It wouldn’t be the same sharing my holiday with you after the event. I want to take my blogging family with me through my journey – holidays included in real time! I had planned on not blogging at all while away, but I ended up doing what I love best as I found my blogger brain was able to write a lot better while away! Blogging by the sea/pool is a lot more fun! This was the first time I actually switched off from everything at home but was able to dip in and out of it without feeling pressure or stress.

I know Bali has a lot more to offer than we were able to see given the restrictions with a baby but we loved what we did see. And the main purpose of our trip was to relax which we definitely did. We spent ten days in Bali and although initially I had thought that was quite a long time, it was actually perfect. We thoroughly got to enjoy ourselves and truly relax as we had ample time.

I even managed to get a photoshoot in with Arjun to model some of my new kid’s tee designs which you can find at Baby Brain Apparel!

Let me start off with our arrival in to beautiful Bali – it started off somewhat chaotic. I would strongly recommend arranging a taxi via your hotel prior to landing. It didn’t feel as straight forward and easy to arrange a taxi at the airport and there was also lots of room for being ripped off. We were quoted $35 for a taxi and $55 for the same thing. In hindsight, it’s something I should’ve organised beforehand. It had totally slipped my mind!

As soon as you enter Bali, it’s bursting with culture. It’s full of a colourful rainbow of flowers, stunning architecture and beautiful statues.  I didn’t manage to take many pictures due to the taxi fiasco!

Once we finally managed to arrange two taxis to accommodate six (plus a minute) and all our lugguage, we arrived at the Grand Hyatt and were instantly wowed. The lobby itself is so stunning – the tall ceiling with the beautiful white pillars with pockets of beautiful fish filled ponds dotted all over  and the spectacular view of the sea in the distance behind a curtain of gorgeous pink flowers was definitely a welcoming sight!

Our first impressions were “wow”. Arjun loved the space and it didn’t take him long to start charming the staff! We’d been told the likes of Barack Obama stay at the Grand Hyatt so we were hoping for good things.

The rooms were really spacious and the staff were great at accommodating our requests of having our rooms located next to each other. We had an interconnecting  room with my sisters which worked out so well for so many reasons a) it meant Arjun had even more freedom to run around b) he had a daily ritual of spending his evenings after dinner with them and would walk back in to our room once he’d finished playing c) it meant they were able to jump in and help us if needed. It also meant we had lots of laughs together.

Our rooms overlooked the sea and we woke daily to the view of soft waves. It was a lovely way to start each day. The beds are big and comfy. We didn’t end up requesting a cot as Arjun slept in the bed with us.

One down side compared to other hotels is that I had informed them we were travelling with a baby and would require a baby bath but we weren’t given that and to be honest I forgot as Arjun just ended up having a bath in the main bathtub.

The bathrooms are beautiful and really spacious. I especially liked be idea of open showers as it made the room look even bigger even though it often looked like a swimming pool once I was done showering! Ha!
I was really excited for breakfast and had really high hopes!  I was a little disappointed by the breakfast buffet but that may be my own fault for not managing my expectations. I had assumed it would be similar to the Maldives – fresh jams and juices. There wasn’t any of that.
The jams were from a jar and fresh juices were not included as part of the buffet. That was a real shame. I haven’t been to a breakfast buffet in years where fresh fruit juices aren’t present – especially in a place like Bali where the fruit is so delicious and readily available.

Otherwise, the staff were very accommodating to vegetarians and would ask if we wanted anything especially made. We asked for paronteh one day and sautéed mushrooms daily as well as hash browns. They were very accommodating at all restaurants to dietary requirements which was great.

The spread of breakfast wasn’t as great as I’ve seen elsewhere but it was definitely sufficient. I’d still say hands down the most amazing breakfast for spread and taste was the Park Hyatt in Goa if you ever visit Goa!

I can’t commend the staff enough, they were all so super friendly and were so attentive to Arjun too. He had a daily catch up with his waitressing buddies each morning which involved running around like a lunatic with them playing chase!

The main swimming pool (of 5!) was absolutely breath taking! It’s made like a lagoon with lots of rock and cave like features. The pool was surrounded by large bushes and trees full of colourful flowers which would fall in to the pool (Arjun would take a bucket around collecting the flowers!). Arjun absolutely loved it as did we. This pool worked best for us as it offered lots of shade which was especially important for Arjun. Though the pictures are gorgeous, they still do it no justice!

There were also two water slides which the others had a blast on! Arjun could spend hours watching his daddy, Nana Ji and masis  go down the slide and would clap enthusiastically when they made it down wth  a big splash. He even went on it a couple of times with daddy and seemed pretty unphased! Though Preetam did ensure he kept Arjun above water when they landed.

I was surprised with how much time Arjun spent in the pool as on previous holidays he’s only spent an hour or two max in total daily  so I only packed one pack of swim nappies this time assuming he’d do the same. I was so wrong! He spent up to five hours each day in the pool and didn’t even have his daily nap! He loved it so much. Not sure if it was the pool itself, the fact that we had company or just that he now likes water. Either way I was super happy! He definitely became a lot more confident as the days progressed but he still dislikes getting his face wet (just like mama!).

He enjoyed jumping in to his daddy’s arms from the side of the pool, pushing the swim float (rather than sitting in it?!) and doing the actions to “row row row your boat” while in the pool. We took a baby float with us and also some zoggs swim toys as well as his beloved turtle which he was given from the hotel in Dubai on his first holiday. We also ended up purchasing a sand bucket and spade for him while there.

Pre warning swim nappies are almost impossible to find local to this hotel.  We were unsuccessful in our atrempts!

The resident huge lizard would sometimes jump in to the pool to cool off too. I thought he was super cute but not everyone shared the same sentiments!

There was also a toddler pool here which is covered by shade. Arjun spent lot of his time in this pool. I saw his confidence grow in this pool as by the end of the trip he’d run up to the fountain where the pool was at its deepest (up to his chest) and stand against the wall. He loved playing with his bucket and spade and collecting flowers from the pool. We did lots of counting too which he always finds hilarious for reasons unbeknown to me! There were no lifeguards at any of the swimming pools here which means you need to be extra vigilant.

Arjun spent a lot of his time wanting to climb the stairs and slopes at the hotel – sometimes very wet ones! He’d have a major tantrum if you refused. I don’t know how or where Preetam finds the patience but I wish I had some of it! I was exhausted after doing it once or twice. They must have burnt a hell of a lot of calories!

Preetams patience and understanding of Arjun is so admirable. It makes my heart melt seeing their bond. At times I find myself getting frustrated and wound up by Arjun’s behaviour.. In his 16 months of life I’ve never seen Preetam lose it with him. He’ll always try and understand why Arjun is behaving how he is as opposed to looking at the behaviour (you can see my post on toddlers and tantrums here). Arjun is super blessed to have such an understanding dada.

It was so nice going on holiday with my family. Especially as the twins have been there since he was very small. It was good for them and his Nana and Nani to spend quality time with him. It was their first holiday with him. He became inseparable from all of them the first day we got there. So much so that he wouldn’t even go to his own daddy! For those of you that know us know that he’s generally stuck to his daddy like glue so it was quite a surprise! But it meant daddy got to enjoy some me time on holiday too.

We really loved our first holiday with my family as we got lots of help. It meant Preetam and I got to relax too. A holiday with a child is so different – long gone are the days where you can snooze by the pool! Now it’s all about ensuring your mobile toddler doesn’t fall in! Arjun became even closer to my family while we were out there – he had a daily ritual of going in to the twins room after dinner and spending hours there playing and entertaining them. He’d ball his eyes out when we bought him back in to our room for bed time. He’s super lucky to have them! His vocab reduced considerably out there to just “Nana”! Even daddy became “Nana” lol. He definitely dotes on his granddad!

He loved splashing around the pool with his masis, reading with them, colouring in with them, dancing with them, chasing them amongst all the other craziness they got up to together!

There’s an on site doctor at the hotel who is on call 24/7 which was very very comforting. I was really nervous about travelling to Bali as I’d read about how it wasn’t easy to obtain medical help if required. The doctor is based on the hotel premises and they also have medication on site at the doctor pharmacy. There is also a hospital a two minute car journey away. Thankfully we didn’t need to use either.

The hotel staff are all so helpful and friendly. I don’t have enough kind words to thank them. They were so attentive to Arjun too – especially the staff at breakfast. They were really helpful in accommodating our request for late check out (5pm) as we had an evening flight.

Bali isn’t the most child friendly place in terms of facilities. We didn’t visit a single place (hotel included), where there were baby change facilities available so it was always a challenge when out and about!

Kid’s aren’t complementary at this hotel which can be painful given he barely ate so a lot of food went to waste. That’s one thing I love about the hotel we stay at in Dubai – kid’s go free. Arjun didn’t eat as much as I’d hoped while we were out there which was a shame. He’s lost his appetite since having chicken pox. In Bali he lived off breakfast muffins, fresh fruit juice, chips, broccoli, watermelon, peanut butter and Cheetos! Odd combination but hey as long as he ate!

The hotel resides on a beach and we spent a few late afternoons there building sand castles. Arjun popped in to the sea a couple of times with his daddy but we did end up spending most of our time by the pool. My dad definitely made the most of the beach!

Arjun had lots of fun building ships and sharks with his masis and daddy. He loves sand so this was like heaven for him!

Another amazing thing to see in Bali is the water blow. We were lucky to have one just by our hotel. It was absolutely breathtaking and so magical! A must see!

Here are a few other things we got to see while in Bali.

Pamper Pamper!

While in Bali, we wanted to make the most of pamper sessions given it’s so cheap. Here are some of the places we visited:

Grand Hyatt Hair Salon: I can be a diva at times (incase you hadn’t noticed), and take any given opportunity to have my hair washed and blow dryed while on holiday. I have super thick long hair, and finding a power shower strong enough while away can sometimes be a struggle. Also, who doesn’t like having their hair done for them?! I was so happy that the hotel had their in house salon! Their sink chairs are super comfy, you get your hair washed pretty much lying down! The staff are so lovely and super friendly – Kristy didn’t believe I was married let alone have a baby haha. It was really relaxing every time I went and they give the most amazing head massages. The in house hair salon was by no means cheap, it cost £27 for a hair wash and blow dry but I was pleased with the result each time.

Tropic Spa: Bali Collection also includes some great spas. We visited Tropic Spa twice for a back massage and once for a manicure and pedicure. I suffer from upper back pain and have had massages all over the world on our travels and I can safely say this is the best massage I’ve ever had in my life. I was massages by two different ladies and the technique and consistency was exactly the same. The massage cost $10 for 30 minutes. Absolute bargain!

The same can’t really be said about the manicure and pedicure – my sisters and mum and I went to the spa for a pamper session on our last day and although we had lots of fun and giggles with the lovely ladies, we all agreed we’ve had a lot better. There wasn’t any consistency between our treatments.

Nom nom!:

One of my favourite things about going on holiday is the food! I was a little bit disappointed with the food in Bali. I imagined the food to be flavoursome and bursting with natural tastes. There were a fed hidden gems:

Pasar Senggol: This Indonesian restaurant is based at the Grand Hyatt. It’s a buffet style outdoor restaurant with gorgeous views at dinner time. The atmosphere is buzzing and there’s a street food style feel. There’s Balinese cultural dance and evening entertainment each day – I loved it as did Arj! He even had a bit of a boogie to the music and made it on to stage with his crazy Harv Masi!

The restaurant manager was super accommodating, as were the staff, in providing us with vegetarian food. They made us fried rice, noodles and BBQ’d corn on the cob especially. The Thai style potato curry was delicious and the selection of crackers was immense. The selection of dessert is also great – lots of ice cream, cakes, fresh fruit (I recommend the mango!) and Balinese desserts.

We ended up visiting here twice during our stay as we really enjoyed the atmosphere.

Queens of India: We were recommended this Indian restaurant by the restaurant manager at the Grand Hyatt. The restaurant was located about a 5 minute car journey from our hotel in Nusa Dua. The food was absolutely delicious!
We’d highly recommend the masala dosa and paneer 65. They were really accommodating in modifying dishes for us – they created paneer 65 instead of potato 65, and also a paneer dosa instead of a potato one! We went back a second time and it was packed full of tourists, locals and a private function which is always a good sign!

Salsa Verde: This is another Grand Hyatt restaurant. I absolutely loved the gorgeous setting of this place, it provided lots of home inspiration for our kitchen and extension!
Again, they were extremely accommodating here. Vegetarian lasagane wasn’t on the menu, but they were happy to make us one from scratch. I’d also highly recommend the mushroom tart – it was delicious!
This was the only restaurant we visited in Bali that had crayons and mats for children to play with – it entertained Arjun for a while which was great!

Out & About:

Bali Collection
: The hotel is situated right next door to Bali Collection which is a shopping complex with restaurants and spas. We were so super lucky to have this at our doorstep and visited at least every other day for a stroll and to stock up on fruit and snacks. We were also able to pretty much purchase anything and everything from here from sunscreen to baby swim toys to snacks to clothes! If you are staying at the Grand Hyatt, don’t become too hung up on forgetting bits and pieces at home. If I’d known I wouldn’t have packed so many nappies and wipes. I didn’t see baby milk but they also had jarred food which i’d packed from home.

The souvenir shop is also amazing – it’s huge and full of all sorts. Arjun had a great time charming all the lovely shop assistants at Bali Collection by waving, shaking hands and even blowing them kisses and one lucky lady got a kiss on her hand!

I love how friendly and welcoming the people of Bali are. They are especially crazy about children. As soon as a shop attendant would spot Arjun, they’d all start shrieking and ran over to him. He loved it! He was like a little celebrity there. He got stopped by the locals too who wanted pictures with him.

Arj really enjoyed running around the shops and exploring. He’d play with toys there but was happy to leave them behind. We purchased his sand bucket and spade from here. In hindsight, had I known, I could’ve also purchased his baby float from here.

Ubud Street Markets: Ubud was about an hour and fifteen minute journey away from Nusa Dua. It was quite tiring but I’m glad we did it for the experience. Preetam decided to stay behind with Arjun at the hotel to spend some time with Arjun. I’m so glad he did because it would have been a very unpleasant experience taking a baby there – a) because of the heat, b) because navigating a buggy in between the tiny stalls would have been such a mission. It definitely isn’t impossible, but I don’t think I would have wanted to put him through that.

At the market you find lots of wood crafts, jewellery, fabric and clothing garments such as harem pants. Haggle! Make sure you haggle! – even when you think you’re getting a good deal, the likelihood is you’re probably still getting slightly ripped off but it’s all good!

I found the currency super confusing in Bali. £50 equated to 1,000,000 Indonesian rupiah. You’re dealing with huge numbers which can get pretty messy – especially when at the markets!

Ubud Local Workshops: On our way to the markets, we visited a few local workshops which was a really nice experience. We visited a wood art workshop where statues from the smallest to the largest are carved to such great intricacy. I was fascinated by the craftsmanship. This was definitely my favourite workshop.

We also visited a jewellery workshop and saw how jewellery was made by hand including earrings and necklaces – again a great level of concentration is required.

And finally we visited a fabric printing workshop where fabrics are decorated through different techniques including woven and wax print.

Temples: On our way to Ubud, we stopped off at Batuan Temple. I’m so glad we did. As we entered we were offered a piece of fabric to wrap around our waists as a sign of respect. It was nice to get involved in the cultural side. The temples in Bali are bursting with amazing architecture and intricacy. We really enjoyed being at the temple and exploring the premises.
We presented our traditional Balinese offerings (including flower petals). The temple felt really peaceful and calm. I felt balanced and reenergised despite the heat – the same feeling I get when I visit the Gurdwara.

We decided to skip the Monkey Forest as I’d read really scary reviews and wasn’t prepared to risk it. If we didn’t have Arjun, I may have taken the risk but the last thing I wanted was to get a monkey bite while away!

Overall we had an amazing time in Bali and Arjun really enjoyed himself! I hope to return one day! We met some lovely people – both staff and other visitors which made our stay even more amazing!

Have you ever visited Bali? How did you find it?

My Top 13 Bali Tantrums (by Arjun)

I had a tantrum in Bali because …

… mummy wouldn’t eat a flower I tried to feed her in the swimming pool (she did pretend to but I’m so over the whole pretend game)

… I wanted to climb the wet and slippery stairs alone by the pool … a gazillion times. I don’t get why they don’t just work with me sometimes!

… I wanted to hold a carrier bag that weighed more than me … whilst daddy carried me.

… it wouldn’t work when I tried to put my romper on my mummy.

… I wanted to be pushed in my pushchair … inside.

… I wanted to walk around with dirty shorts on my head … mummy and daddy let me :).

… I wanted to push my own pushchair … whilst daddy carried me 🙂

… I wanted to walk around in Nana Ji’s size 10 trainers.

… I wanted to hold my Nani and Masis hand while in my buggy all the time 🙂

… I wanted to speak on the phone … Most of the time

… I wanted to keep a wet towel over my head during dinner

… I wanted to wear a carrier bag scarf

… I wanted to push a stool around the whole of Bali airport.
