Arjun’s Construction Themed  2nd Birthday Party!

I can’t believe my baby has turned 2! It’s crazy! I felt like I had a lot more time to absorb Arjun turning 1 than I have absorbing him turning 2. The start of terrible twos has definitely been challenging but I’m looking forward to watching my bestest little bud flourish and grow and find his own feet. Incase you missed it, you can read my post; to my son on your second birthday.

Given Arjun is pretty mad about building blocks, diggers and tractors, coupled with the fact that our house is a building site at the moment with a brand new garage being built and an extension (eek!!), there was no question about this year’s theme! If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that I’m an absolute sucker for party planning. I love it so much and as small as I try and keep things, I always manage to get carried away!

I learnt so much from Arjun’s first birthday. I found the actual day really stressful as he was teething and a little grumpy. This year I was so much more relaxed and just let things be. We all had such a great time – especially Arjun.

Here are our party details:

Invites

This year I decided to send out text invites instead of hard copy ones. I figure every time I’m sent an invite, it always gets misplaced with the lunatic toddler that is Arjun! I always find it much easier to have things to hand on my phone via text or email. I absolutely loved them!

General décor

Theming is really important to me. However, this year I wanted to be more sensible with our money and try and use what we already had. I was quite pleased with myself although I do wish we hadn’t needed a marquee! I felt like we had no choice as the weather was turbulent the few days leading up to the party and I didn’t want to risk a downpour during the party. We always hire our marquees from Firstklass Marquees and are never disappointed! I decided to keep the marquee decor very minimal compared to last year with fabric draping on the roof and a black carpet.

Given we had to purchase large metal fencing as required by building controls for our extension, I decided to use this as a basis for sprucing the garden up. I purchased hazard tape in abundance and used this to cover all the fencing and also purchased black and yellow bunting. I decided to print large tools to add a splash of colour and also scattered them around. The road signs were made at home printed at home. This décor was pretty cost effective and it looked good too.

I used the same company that I used for Arjun’s first birthday for the majority of the balloons – Balloon Kingdom. I didn’t go as crazy as last year, but balloons always help to fill gaps and have a great impact. I got a few giant cones made out of balloons which we scattered around.

For the table décor, I used plain orange, black, silver and yellow plastic disposable table covers and placed a trio of balloons on each using a cone as the weight. We purchased the cones from Poundland (4 for £1!).

I also had giant diggers and tractors made out of balloons – they weren’t cheap but I loved how they added another fun element to the décor. I used a company called ContraBand Events and would highly recommend them.

For the kid’s tables, I used construction themed table covers and printed colouring sheets at home. I was definitely a little more savvy this time (sort of).

For the entrance, I had a sign printed at Vista Print which said “SITE ENTRANCE” and placed a giant tyre that we had on the ground. I also used two trestles at the entrance and tied two balloon bouquets to them.ARJUN2

Cake table décor and cake

The cake backdrop is always important to me. I decided to use a metal fencing with a black backdrop to bring out the detail on the backdrop. I purchased a photography backdropEdit.

Instead of the standard hazard tape, here I used “Caution birthday zoneEdit” tape. The beautifully creative birthday sign was made by my sister again this year – she has since started her own little business making personalised signs, drop me a message if you’d like her contact details. I thought last years was good, but I loved this year’s even more!

Preetam drew the tool cut outs on A3 thick card and we painted them at home. I made the road signs were made and printed at home. I love how personal the backdrop was. I also had two large balloon pillars that Susan made at either side of the cake table.

The construction themed cake was ordered from Rozay Cakes again – my go to girl for all our cakes. Not only does she go out of her way to create beautiful designs, she also pays so much attention to detail – notice how both this years and last years cakes included clouds!! The cake also tasted amazing – we went for a traditional birthday cake for the top tier with buttercream and jam and an Oreo cake for the bottom tier. I purchased mini cone candles for Arjun to blow out.

This year we decided to let Arjun blow out his birthday cake with his little buddies and cousins now that he’s a big boy. He was really shy and Preetam and I ended up jumping in! Needless to say, he wasn’t shy to tuck in!

Kid’s Food

If you read my blog posts on Arjun’s birthday last year, you’ll know that my most favourite part is theming the kids food table. I absolutely love it! I purchased colourful plastic table covers and table skirting online to cover the tables. Instead of digger themed plates and cups, I went for vibrant construction coloured ones.

Again for the décor, I used a metal fence panel and draped the remainder of the photography backdrop behind it. I used hazard tape and customised homemade food road signs. I also purchased inflatable road signs which I absolutely loved! I laid out the food and labelled the food using construction materials. I made the signs at home out of orange and yellow card by making mini horses. Here’s the kid’s food menu along with the names we used:

Traffic lights” Fruit skewers using an oasis covered in hazard tissue paper.
Washers” Mini pizzas
Tools” Cheese and jam sandwiches using cookie cutters
Bolts” Smiley faces:
Paint” Pouches
Beams” Vegetable fingers
Boulders” Quorn nuggets
Rubble” Popcorn
Cement” Humous
Rope” Vegetable sticks
Filler” Dip
Screws” Pasta
Breeze Blocks” Cheese and onion mini rolls
Paint Pots” Jelly
Nuts” Savoury cheese biscuits
Nails” Wotsits
Lumber” Wafer biscuits
Spare Tyres” Chocolate mini donuts
Bearings” Malteasers
Thanks for your hard days work, please take your days wage” Chocolate coins

I used a combination of orange, yellow and silver platters, Arjun’s toy diggers, wicker baskets, painted cardboard boxes, cones, a “junk food skip”, and garage storage compartments to display the food. I was thrilled with how it turned out!

Entertainment

As it was a construction themed party, I decided to set up a little construction zone for the kids. As the kids arrived, they were given a hard hat with their name label. The construction zone included:

A tent with tunnel: I managed to pick this up for a bargain and we’ve kept it in the garden since as Arjun didn’t have a tunnel before.
Tyres: We used old tyres as part of the display
Breeze blocks:  my sister managed to get lots of boxes from work which they (with the assistance of Arjun) painted so they resembled breeze blocks for the kids to build with.

Building blocks: I hired giant colourful lego pieces from Best Bounce for the kids to build with. Arjun really enjoyed playing with these
Ball pool: we hired a ball pool from Best Bounce
Ride on toys: again, we hired these from Best Bounce
Building bricks: I purchased a construction set from TTS which included foam building bricks. Although the set was quite expensive (£179.99), I thought it would be a lovely keepsake for Arjun to play with in the garden while the building work is going on in our house. He’s all about that at the moment!
Cement mixer: again this came with the TTS set
Wheel barrow: again this came with the TTS set and I also purchased a few extra that were on offer at Argos (2 for £15)
Sandpit: the tray came with the TTS set and we filled it with existing sand toys we had. I purchased a few sand mills for the children to play with. The kids enjoyed putting sand in to the cement mixer and wheelbarrows.

TTS Construction Set (picture credit: http://www.primaryict.co.uk/tts-early-years-building-construction-site-84-pieces-approx_ey04889_5184.htm)

Bosch tool bench and other tools: we placed Arjun’s existing tools and tool bench in the garden as part of the construction zone.
Cones: the plain orange ones were from poundland and the colourful ones were from here. Arjun really loves playing with the cones even now!
Fencing and road signs
Playdough construction: I purchased playdough and playdough toys from Tiger and set up on a little table

ARJUN373

I hired a large adult assault course bouncy castle for the grown ups from Best Bounce, however Arjun probably spent the most time on it! He is such an adrenaline junkie like his daddy! I was so proud of him for going for it. I loved seeing him enjoy himself so much – it filled my heart with so much joy.

I decided to have an entertainer again this year but to be honest probably could have gone without as the kids were amused by the bouncy castle and construction zone! I don’t think we’ll bother with an entertainer next year – or I’ll be calling on my sister who is a nursery nurse! Ha! I had asked for a Peppa Pig which was a big mistake as despite how much he loves the diddy little piggy on TV, she wasn’t so diddy in real life and he was terrified! Oops.

ARJUN292 ARJUN296 ARJUN308 ARJUN309 ARJUN315

To keep the adults entertained, I also decided to have an in-house milkshake stand “Build a Milkshake” – again I got the banner printed from Vista Print after designing it myself on good ol Paint! Preetam built the milkshake stand and my sisters and their friends kindly painted it for me.

We offered Oreo, Ferrero Rocher, strawberry and areo mint milkshakes and it went down an absolute treat!

I ordered adhesive chalk paper and a chalk pen to make the menu sign – my sister in law used her artistic ability to put it together!

 ARJUN75

Given the ice cream van was such a hit last year, we called him back again this year. I also decided to introduce a little kid’s table which included sprinkles and sweets for the older children. I ordered a mini cardboard ice cream van and little paper cups and filled them with sweets. Again, I got a banner printed which said “Build An Icecream”. The adults and children alike enjoyed the unlimited ice cream and even got the chance to make their own!

ARJUN67ARJUN69

Adult Food

Instead of catered food this year, I decided to go with the cheaper option of calling on relatives for help. I ordered pizza from outside, my mother in law made her famous dokra (savoury cake) and gulab jaman (indian sweet), my mum made her aloo papdi chaat and got samosas, my aunt made her delicious pasta and our lovely neighbours who are caterers took care of the paneer, chips, salad and naan! I hired the same waitresses that we hire at all our functions to help manage things on the day – it made all the difference.  I didn’t have to worry about a thing!

ARJUN73

ARJUN74

In addition to Arjun’s birthday cake, I also got two giant cakes from Costco for a bargain price of £11 each and they fed 45 people each! They also tasted delicious!!

Party Bags

I kept the party bags simple this year although they cost about the same as last! Instead of themed bags/boxes, I opted for plain yellow and black paper bags and customised them myself by including a strip of hazard tape.

I wanted the contents to be useful and something the children could actually play with for longer than 30 seconds!  I opted for a bottle of paint and stamping blocks (something one of my friends has done before and it worked really well!) and beautiful handmade chocolate tractors/diggers that were personalised by the lovely Marie from Love Little Treats. I always like to include a personal touch and I loved the little gift tags that Marie created.

Outfits

Compared to last year, our outfits were an absolute doddle this year! I decided to get all the immediate family matching t shirts. I purchased the iron on transfers from ETSY and made them at home myself. I wanted something fun and this was perfect!

The roles I went with (in a very random order!) were:

Arjun: Birthday Boss
Daddy: Supervisor
Mummy: Planner (very apt!)
Nana Ji: Foreman
Dada Ji: Foreman
Nani Ji: Designer
Dadi Ji: Designer
Indy Chacha: Electrician
Jas Fufar Ji: Structural Engineer
Mane Pua: Architect
Harv Masi: Inspector
Goov Masi: Operator

For Arjun, I purchased a pair of tools Fred and Noah leggings which were perfect for the day – they were comfy and the design fitted in so well!

ARJUN99

ARJUN100

ARJUN392

All in all, we had such a fun filled day! I definitely got to enjoy this year a lot more as I was so much more relaxed! The Nanis and Dadis even managed a little bhangra session at the end (obviously!)!

A huge thank you to all those that helped us put the party together – my darling sisters, all our family and our extended family – our friends and a big thank you to those that came and celebrated with us!x

Arjun’s 1st Birthday Cake Smash Pictures by East West Photography … A Few Months Later!

Better late than never right?! … Given Arjun turned 19 months today, I thought this was a relevant throwback!

We had a fun filled photoshoot at the East West Photography studio for Arjun’s first birthday. He stayed by the cake even after the shoot was done – no surprises there right?! Here are a few shots 🙂

How We Spent Our Christmas in Our DIY Winter Wonderland!

This post is a few weeks late due to the craziness of my work schedule at the moment which involves lots of travel! But I wanted to share with you how we spent Christmas 🙂

I love Christmas – the general buzz, the pretty decorations, the overdone houses I pass as I drive down our road (I can talk!) but most of all I love the family time. I’m an absolute sucker for parties, gatherings, themes and doing things for others and Christmas is the most perfect time for all that.

This year Christmas was even more exciting than the last though it did bring a feeling of bitter sweet as we realised how much Arjun has grown so quick. Christmas has definitely changed with a toddler!

I decided to put up our Winter Wonderland earlier than last year to also celebrate the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Having it up earlier, meant we could also host more kiddies Christmas parties. Arjun was so much more aware this year of his surroundings and it really felt like he appreciated them.

It was the cutest thing ever watching him react to his transformed living room. He squealed with excitement and rushed over to hug me – almost as if he knew I’d done it for him! It was so sweet! His reaction to the snow was hilarious – he was scared to step on it and kept jumping off when he reluctantly “dipped” his toe in. He soon warmed up to it! He also decided to use the poor snowman as a broom!

Anytime Arjy’s friends came over, he’d rush over to show them his little Winter Wonderland. I loved seeing his personality come out so strong this year! He had a great time with his buddies in his Winter Wonderland.

For children’s entertainment at our kid’s get togethers, I included crafts activities for the children to make their own Christmas decorations using a hand or footprint (with their mummy’s support), and also gingerbread decorating. I purchased ready made gingerbread men and purchased colourful icing and toppings. My son was the only one to eat his gingerbread instead of decorating it! Next year, as Arjun gets older, I’ll be introducing kiddie games which I’m excited for!

In addition to the Winter Wonderland, this year as he’s more aware, I was also able to introduce an advent calendar. I wasn’t keen on intrudcoing a chocolate one because let’s face it 2 days worth of continuous chocolate would probably get him in to the habit of expecting it, let alone 25! I saw a fab blog post by my blogging buddy Stacey over at Mummy and the Bubbas on non chocolate advent calendars and immediately ordered the V Tech cars one. Arjun loved opening it the first few mornings but by about the 7th day, he’d figured out that there was a treat behind every single door and that he actually didn’t have to wait till tomorrow to open it – he opened the whole thing! But it meant he got to enjoy it. Perhaps next year an advent calendar will work better?! I’d highly recommend the V Tech advent calendar – it’s full of different vehicles and props which include a light up and sound toy too.

As we did last year, Arjun and I also made a Christmas tree decoration this year too. We created a snowman using his footprint 🙂

In addition to the above, we also introduced a Christmas Eve box this year which I had so much fun putting together! Arjun loved unpacking his box and had the most fun with the bubbles and the stickers in his activity box!

For Christmas Eve, Preetam and Arjun had also made me a Christmas Eve chill out hamper which included snacks and DVDs (ps the dog treats were for the dog … I think! Haha!). I was so touched and grateful for the gesture especially as I’d spent the day in the kitchen! We all got in to our matching Christmas pyjamas and vegged out on the sofa and watched the movies they’d picked – “Inside Out” and “Pixels”. Arjun enjoyed pinching my popcorn the little Food Thief! He had his first hot chocolate that evening and loved it! All in all we had a really relaxing enjoyable evening as a family – something I really wish we had more of.

Christmas Day was quite different to the last but in a good way. Arjun was only 6 months last Christmas so wasn’t anywhere near as self-sufficient as he is now. He woke up, had his Christmas breakfast of a Santa crepe made by daddy, inspired by Pinterest!

He then opened all his presents which he found particularly exciting! Last year he was more interested in the wrapping paper than the actual gifts! Haha! He really loved playing with a toy remote control car that my Masi got him (mum’s sister). We spent an hour or so opening, playing and clearing up our gifts before we got ready for the family to come over! Arj made sure he gave Bruno his gift – he’s absolutely obsessed with him at the moment!

The dress code this year was “red and green” – I love theming Christmas as it’s just another way to add to the fun and festivities! Last year we all dressed up as characters.

I found preparing for Christmas this year a lot more relaxing than last year. I wasn’t as highly strung (haha I said it!) or stressed, I wanted to enjoy the prep as well as enjoy my time with the family. It also really helps that both families help with the cooking!

Once the family arrived, Arjun opened all his additional gifts and had lots of fun dancing to music and playing with his new toys! He absolutely LOVED having all his loved ones with him and was so over excited.

He enjoyed his Christmas dinner and was overwhelmed by the variety on his plate! He burnt off his Christmas dinner by dancing (lots) and fell asleep between 2-4 when we played games! You can check out my blog post on my family Christmas games for inspiration for next year!

All in all we had a perfect day! We hope you had a great one too x

Christmas Family Party Games Ideas

I’ve always loved hosting gatherings at our house and for me it’s so important that people enjoy their time when here. I love creating a fun filled environment with lots of memories.

Post Christmas lunch, when everyone’s in a semi food coma, playing games is always a great way to perk everyone up! I love my family as everyone’s so up for getting involved – mum’s and dad’s included and to be honest, they’re usually the most competitive!

I generally purchase token novelty gifts as prizes – it always makes it that little bit more fun when there’s a prize up for grabs! You’re guaranteed to pick up some great buys from shops like Tiger.

Here are the Christmas games I had planned this year:

It’s a Wrap!: This game is played in pairs whereby each team is given 60 seconds to wrap their box using the materials provided and each person can only use one hand. The winners are the team that wrapped the quickest and neatest.

Materials required:

  • A sheet of wrapping paper per pair
  • A box to wrap
  • Celotape for each pair

Mitts and Gifts: This game is a follow on game from “It’s a wrap”. Each team is given a gift that was wrapped by another team and one pair of oven gloves. Both people in each team must wear one glove from the oven mitts and unwrap the gift using only the hands covered in a mitt. The winning team is the one that unwraps the fastest!

Materials required:

  • Oven gloves

Christmas Tree Construction Challenge: Each pair is given 36 paper cups and are required to construct a pyramid (aka a tree)! The team that manages to do this the quickest in the correct form is the winner! You’ll get some pretty hilarious outcomes with this game – we ended up with one very short stocky and lopsided tree!

Materials required:

  • 36 paper cups per team

Guess the Ornaments in the Jar: This is an easy game and as the name suggests, each person must guess how many ornaments are included in a jar without removing them from the jar. The winner is the one that comes closest to the correct number.

Materials required:

  • A jar
  • Ornaments

Christmas Doodle: Each person is given a paper plate and must place it on top of their head and draw a picture without looking in 30 seconds. I decided to ask everyone to draw a snowman with a hat and scarf on. The masterpieces were hilarious!

Materials required:

A paper plate per person or a sheet of paper

A felt tip pen

Bauble Swap: This is a super fun competitive game whereby all the guests were separated in to two teams. In each bowl, place 12 of the same coloured baubles. Place two bowls with different coloured baubles on one side of the table, and the other two on the other side. The aim of the game is to swap all the baubles between the bowls on each side of the table fastest against the other team. The team that manages to swap them fastest is the winner.

Materials required:

  • 24 baubles in one colour
  • 24 baubles in second colour
  • 4 bowls

Snowball Throw : Again all the guests were split in to two teams. Each member of the team was given 3 “snowballs” and had to throw them in to their teams bowl from a 2 meter distance. The team with the most number of snowballs in the bowl won.

Materials required:

  • Polystyrene balls (3 per person playing)
  • 2 bowls

Christmas Tree Chop: Here, each person is given a piece of card which they must hold behind their back. They have 60 seconds to use their hands to create a Christmas tree shape behind their back! The winner is the person that creates the best tree.

Material required:

  • 1 piece of card per person

None of these games required much planning and preparation and they were cheap to administer and provided us with lots of fun, giggles and memories!
I’d love to hear about your favourite Christmas games!x

Baker Days Letter Box Cake Review

When I was contacted by Baker Days about reviewing a letterbox cake, I was excited! Who doesn’t love cake?! Especially one that gets delivered right to your front door!

As the name suggests, these cakes are letter box sized, perfect to be sent by post.
It was Arjun’s 18 month birthday approaching so I decided to get one made specifically for that. I was so confused on which one to go for as the choice is immense. There’s such a wide choice of personalised cakes for so many occasions and you also have the option of including a picture! How cute! We decided to go for a dinosaur themed cake as he loves dinosaurs at the moment.

The parcel arrives in a little box and included:

  • A gift card
  • 3 multicoloured balloons
  • A party blower
  • Candles
  • A beautiful tin box with the words “just for you” containing the cute little cake!

I was seriously impressed! I had just thought it’d be a cake in a cardboard box but we got far more than we’d expected. I’m all for the finishing little touches and I felt the additional items sent really make it that extra bit special.

I kept the little tin the cake came in as its so cute to store little bits in!

We cut the cake with Arjun and he was so fascinated by the funky colours in front of him. He also attempted to blow a few balloons! Haha! He also had fun trying to play with the party blower.

The cake was a vanilla sponge with icing and it tasted DELICIOUS! The sponge was moist and the cake is meant to serve 3-4 people with generous portions. We managed to get about 8 small servings from it and shared it with our friends that popped over the following day.

When ordering your cake, once you’ve selected the design, you can choose the size and flavour (5 different options!). They also offer a gluten and dairy free option catering to everyone’s needs and dietary requirements.

The cake kept so well. It’s preserved in a plastic covering and lasted over a week when the last slice got eaten!

All in all I think the letterbox cake concept is a fantastic idea. At £14.99 I feel it’s great value for money for a special occasion. This is a great idea if you want to surprise someone or let them know you’re thinking of them. I often don’t get the chance to see my friends on birthdays, so I’ll definitely be using Baker Day’s in the future to surprise them when I can’t be there.

Do you want to win a Baker Day’s letterbox cake? I’m hosting a giveaway in conjunction with Baker’s Day! All you need to do is follow @BabyBrainMemoirs and @BakerDays on Instagram, and tag two friends in my Instagram post. The competition is open till Sunday 24th January and to UK and Ireland residents only.
Good luck!x

Christmas Eve Box for a Toddler

I was so excited to put one of these together this year!  The main aim was for us to spend quality time as a family through planning various little activities through the gift of this box.

I purchased the personalised box from ETSY:

Here’s what we included in ours:

  • “Little elf” pyjamas: Preetam and I have the mum and dad ones and it’s a “thing” now where we all wear matching PJs on Christmas Eve. I purchased these ones from eBay.

  • Rudolph slippers: how could I not?! They’re so cute!

  • Hot chocolate Rudolph cone: Arjun’s had a sneaky taste of hot chocolate before but this will be his first proper little cup! I bought the cone from ETSY and loved that it had a Christmas touch. I’m a total sucker for theming!

  • Christmas sticker and activity book: he loves stickers and also spends a lot of time mark making so we thought it’d be nice for us to do some colouring together.

  • Christmas bubbles: another favourite thing of his!

  • Dear Santa (Rod Campbell): a book that will probably come out every year. I’m excited for us to read this as he squeals with excitement with flap and lift books.

  • A Santa teddy: I’m guessing he’ll be patting Santa to sleep before Santa has a chance to come and deliver presents!

  • The Muppet Christmas Carol [DVD]: One of many Christmas movies I remember from my childhood! I picked this one as I felt he’d be entertained by the characters 🙂

  • Popcorn: as its his favourite thing and you can’t watch a movie without snacks right?!

  • Gingerbread decorating kit: He loves gingerbread men and so I thought we’d decorate one to leave for Santa!

Now I’m just waiting for daddy to come home so we can open his box and have some family time on the sofa eating snacks and watching movies!

What did you include in yours?x

13 Ways Christmas Has Changed Since Having a Baby …

Here goes…!

1) It’s pretty tempting to wrap wrapping paper as its more appreciated!

2) Long gone are the days where our gifts are wrapped with precision and decorated with bows and ribbon … Now presents look like our dog has wrapped them with a blindfold on as it’s a race against time to get them wrapped before the toddler decides he wants to get involved!

3) Doubling up on wrapping paper is pretty normal – re-wrapping gifts in our household is highly likely as half of them get opened by the toddler who believes everything is for him.

4) A handprint homemade Christmas tree decoration is mandatory.

5) A following year calendar featuring your child is a staple gift for the grandparents every year!

6) The cutest gifts come from the tiny tot …  Hubby can always rely on the lovely nursery staff to reduce you to tears with the cutest creations by your little bub when he forgets to take care of the gift from the baby!

7) It’s only fair to decorate your house modestly like there’s no tomorrow.

8) Your Christmas shopping list suddenly doubles (and so does the amount of wrapping!) as your baby has an even bigger social circle than you do.

9) Baubles need to be placed tactfully on the tree, or else could be mistaken for a football/basketball by the toddler.

10) Wearing matching family Christmas pyjamas is now a “thing”!

11) Remembering that Santa is ONE person despite his various forms when communicating with the little ones.

 12) Your toddler insists on being wrapped too.

13) We attempted festive baking… There’s a first!

How has Christmas changed for you?x

Party Bags & Supplies Dino Blast Party Pack Review

For those of you that follow my blog, will know that I’m a sucker for party planning! Arjun’s first birthday party took almost 6 months to plan and every little detail had to be perfect!

So no surprises that the thought of his second birthday often creeps up, given he isn’t even 18 months yet, I do try and push it aside! There’s no harm in thinking about themes though right!?

When I was given the option to review a party pack, I jumped at the chance! Especially given I’d made the silly mistake of buying Arjun’s first birthday supplies individually instead of as a pack.

Party Bags and Supplies have a wide variety of party packs and I was really spoilt for choice, but given Arjun’s so in to dinosaurs at the moment, and it is a theme possibility, I decided to go for the Dino Blast themed party pack.

Each party pack contains 8 cups, 8 plates, 16 napkins, 1 table cover plus 8 filled party bags. Per the website, the Dino Blast themed party bag included 1 x dino glider, 1 x stretchy dinosaur, 1 x dinosaur finger puppet, 1 x finger trap & 1 x set of micro stickers. Each pack costs £28.

I really like how colourful the themed pack is, I’m a fan of lots of bright colours especially for kid’s parties. There’s lots of additional matching décor available on the site which would make it a lot easier to theme the event.

The cups and plates feel like great quality – they’re not thin and flimsy and I love the gloss finish on the plates – it gives them a really good quality feel and also enhances the colours. The napkins are two ply and are large in size.
The table cover is plastic which means its easy to wipe down.  It’s a bordered style cover so the centre is white and the sides are printed.  This is the type of table cover that would be perfect for the cake table.  I made the mistake of using an all over printed table cover for Arjun’s 1st birthday cake table which didn’t allow for the cake to be showcased as much.

I love that the party bags are put together according to the theme. If you read my party bag post from Arjun’s birthday, you’d have seen that I spent a lot of time trapsing the internet to theme them! Having a headstart with pre filled themed party bags would have been great!
The items included as per the website are also similar to the types of things I’d look to include in a party bag such as the glider and the finger puppets and also stickers as they’re Arjun’s new favourite thing! However, there is a disclaimer on the website stating that contents may vary. What I actually received was stickers, a gunky mini egg dinosaur, a stretchy dinosaur figurine, haribos and a finger trap. Other than the stickers and the dinosaur figurine these aren’t items I’d probably choose myself.

If I was to purchase this pack, I’d definitely add to the party bags with another edible and another toy (or two) – something like these dino blow outs.  I would also probably swap the plastic party bags with something different like perhaps party boxes. Although the party bags include items for 3+, a lot of the children attending Arjun’s party would be over this age anyway. They wouldn’t be as suitable for the younger children especially items like the gunky mini egg dinosaur.

I really like the pack and I think its great value for money – especially given how much I ended up spending on Arjun’s birthday! The sum of the items bought individually is greater than buying it in a pack by about £4. I’ll definitely be opting for one of these party packs for Arjun’s second party once I’ve definitely decided on a theme, they’re a lot better value for money!  I used this company for Arjun’s 1st birthday but just made the mistake of buying individual items! The service I received was great and the items got delivered fast!

Arjun’s First Birthday Jungle Party … The Party Bags/Favours

 Hello All!

Welcome to my final post in the “Arjun’s first jungle themed party” series – “The Party Bags/Favours”.

Indian tradition dictates that you generally give something sweet on a happy occasion to your guests. I decided to do something extra special and worked with Chas at Barfia to come up with something that would fit our theme. We decided on animal print barfi with exotic flavours such as mango and passion fruit. The barfi looked amazing and we received so many great messages on them. The boxes were personalised with ribbon that said “Thank you for celebrating my 1st birthday with me”.  My personal favourite barfia flavour is definitely the black forest gateau!

I’ve always been excited to put together party bags for when I had a baby so now that it was my chance, the party bags had to be perfect (or close to!). I wanted most things included to be jungle themed.

I decided on animal shaped party boxes which I purchased from here.

Arjun and I did the party bags together – he was super helpful by grabbing all the toys he could and throwing them through the banister and on to the stairs! We had lots of fun together and I smile when I think about the build up to his party as we shared so many special moments through it. I’m glad we did as I generally have the tendency to get myself in a panic and a bit of a rut, but giving myself ample time meant we really enjoyed it together.

I ensured every party bag included an animal mug as a keepsake. I didn’t want to just include toys that would eventually get lost, I wanted to give all the children something they could use and keep for a while. I loved these mugs – you can purchase them from here.

Other bits I included were:

  • Squeaky toy for the smaller babies
  • Ella’s kitchen pouch for the smaller babies
  • Animal spring upsEdit for the older children

I also included personalised stickers on each party bag with a thank you message signed from Arjun. I purchased these from here.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my party posts. I really appreciate all the kind message I’ve received in response! I’m so glad you liked what we did x

Arjun’s First Birthday Jungle Party … The Food!

I think it’s definitely safe to say there was no shortage of food! Most people left on their way in to a food coma! A happy and content belly is definitely a success in my book!

For the adults we had a catered BBQ by Masala Creations who we’ve worked with before – they are always so professional. I decided catered food would be best given the volume of guests. It also meant one less thing to worry about. Masala Creations took away all my worries and instilled me with the confidence that they’d take care of all on the food front. And they did. I dealt with Harpinder and Ruby who were really helpful. They did a site visit to walk through the day and were really great at reassuring me they were also there to support me as well as taking care of the food. That reassurance went a long way!

We’re vegetarian and don’t drink alcohol so don’t serve meat or alcohol at our functions. The adult menu was:

Starters:

  • Paneer shashlik
  • Pizza samosas
  • Vegetable spring rolls

Mains:

  • Vegetarian burgers in buns
  • Chilli paneer
  • Chips
  • Noodles
  • Corn on the cob
  • Sweet potato
  • Garlic bread
  • Salad
  • Potato salad
  • Coleslaw

Dessert:

We were really pleased with the service. We’d hired four waitresses to hold the fort on the food side and to ensure plates and things were picked up as they were used. I didn’t have to worry at all about the adults being fed – it was completely taken care of.

I decided to make the children’s food myself at home. I really wanted to present it beautifully and so focused my attention on that. The design and detail of the kids food was probably the part that I invested the most time in and I was so pleased with the end result! It was totally worth it!

I created homemade signs for each dish (again all vegetarian food) by creating fun names for the food. I then included animal pictures on each and  backed each sign on to safari print card which I purchased here. I then folded over so that the signs were free standing. I love how colourful and vibrant they looked.

I had created homemade safari table curtains for three round tables which were displayed next to each other to display the food.

I purchased safari print wrapping paper which I used to wrap random boxes (thank you Amazon! Your giant boxes for the diddiest things came in handy!) to display the food on at varying heights. I ensured these were stuck down to the table and to each other with tape for health and safety reasons. This was probably my favourite bit – I’m so glad I’d thought of something to give the display height and even more colour!

I reused leaf shaped trays which were purchased for my baby shower. I love how effective they were at tying everything together and they kept with the theme and were the perfect size for the purpose.

I also purchased inflatable palm trees, a zebra, a lion, a monkey and a giraffe to use for display around the kids food to bring it all alive.

I purchased animal shaped plates for the younger babies and safari truck party trays for the older kids to eat their food from. I also purchased animal cups and straws and animal napkins for the children. There’s such a wide array of party supplies you can get, but this particular set was my favourite.

My friend Sav and I used to do fruit displays for weddings and parties years ago and we decided to do a dinky one for the children at the party. It was so much fun to do a (much) mini, less stressful display after so long! Our fruit display skills came in handy after years! Here are a few pictures from weddings and parties we’ve done previously..

For the mini fruit display, I carved a hippo head out of a watermelon which was filled with cantaloupe, papaya and watermelon balls, a crocodile out of pineapples and kiwis, papaya baskets filled with green and red grapes, and “palm trees” out of pineapples. My friend Sav also helped to create strawberry and pineapple and cheese “hedgehogs”.

In addition to the fruit, the children’s menu consisted of:

  • Chocolate Cheetah/Jammy Giraffe/Cheesy Snake Sandwiches: chocolate spread, strawberry jam and cheese sandwiches using assorted animal cookie cutters to shape the sandwiches in to safari animals.
  • Snake Spiral Pasta: tomato fusilli pasta.
  • Elephant Trunks: Bird’s eye veggie oven cooked fingers.
  • Cheetah Chicken Nuggets: Oven cooked Quorn nuggets.
  • Cheeky Cheetah Waffles: Oven cooked carrot and potato waffles purchased from Asda kids range.
  • Monkey Smiley Faces: Oven cooked McCain potato smiley faces.
  • Parrot Pizza: Oven cooked Tesco’s cheese and tomato mini pizzas.
    • Tiger Tails: Wotsits
    • Critter Crunch: Quavers
    • Zebra Chips: Tortilla chips
    • Roar Vegetables and Humous: Humous with sliced peppers displayed in the shape of a lions head.
    • Jungle Fruit Display: as detailed above 🙂
    • Lime Slime: mixed jelly
      • Hungry Hippo Hummous Dip
      • Big Bear Breadsticks
      • Cub Corner: For new eaters, I had Ella’s Kitchen pouches and Organix crisps
      • Watering Hole: Drinks included Capri Sun, Fruit Shoots and bottled water.

For our gluten free friends, I had arranged for separate food to be made which included paneer, chips, corn on the cob, and gluten free pizza.

I hired mini children’s tables and also purchased safari themed activity placemats for the children which you can read more about here

In addition to the above, we also had a crepe and waffle stall, a slush puppy stand and a hot dog stand. The ice cream van we hired also went down a treat!

Hope you loved our food ideas as much as I enjoyed planning them!x
